This ruined my day.
There's a bit of Spider-Man in all of us.

Scott Summers IS NOT a delusional egotist.
As neat as the cameo would be, I'm kinda relieved that it was just a rumor. With how many characters they're trying to pack into the Avengers movie, every second that doesn't need to be edited out for time constraints is going to be crucial to making sure everyone gets adequate screen time.

They should just sneak some webbing into the background in NYC.

Spider-Man will not be in the Avengers.

This is one of those things if it was true I really didn't want to know about it four months before the movie came out.
Yep, Daredevil could not use the Bugle years back so I doubt The Avengers can either.
The "cameos" will probably closer to easter eggs. They'll be relegated to teases of characters that they're going to push soon, but haven't - like Dr. Strange or Ant-Man. Given how big the cast already is, I don't think that they're going to try to squeeze in any more beyond the mystery aliens.
I think it was confirmed that there wouldn't be any easter eggs or cameos but we'll see.

I can't imagine Stan Lee not wondering onscreen for two seconds at some point.
'The marquis. Well, you know, to be honest, he seems a little bit dodgy to me.'
'Mm,' she agreed. 'He's a little bit dodgy in the same way that rats are a little bit covered in fur."
MONTHS AGO, I called it that Spidey would ultimately be in the Avengers, on film. Everyone pooh-poohed it, said it would never happen because of different studios, movie rights, blah blah blah blah. As time goes on, it seems that there are more and more signs pointing in the direction that this will actually happen. Marvel can deny it now if they like, but the genie is damn near out of the bottle on this already.

This misses the point.
Every one knows Sony has ALL of the Spider-Man film rights. The rumor was that Sony had cut a deal with Marvel despite that.
No one was ever under the impression that Marvel Studios could include Spider-man in their film with out a special deal.
Now if that actually happened or not who knows.

Would have been a treat to see Spidey...

They could probably show Andrew Garfield in a cameo with a camera in his hand, and everything would be kosher.
Also, I recall some Buffy fanatics citing in the past out that Whedon is perfectly willing to outright lie about upcoming projects to throw fanboys off the scent.
