I say scrap the X-Men Trilogy, also Origins Wolverine, and make First Class the official universe for the X-Men Film Franchise.

Awesome, awesome news! I say start with the JFK assassination and then move into the 70s for most of the movie (Vietnam era) and end up in the early 80s teeing it up for a 3rd installment which introduces Cyclops, Storm and Jean Grey as kids.

Also, streamline the Cable character and put him in this. As a soldier he'd fit in perfectly in the Vietnam era and could be the field leader of the young team of X-men now that Xavier is in a wheelchair. Just a thought...

Can't wait to get more details about this sequel.

Unless I'm wrong, I think they're all part of the same film universe. Hugh Jackman/Wolverine made a cameo in the first, the mansion was the same, etc...

The JFK assassination would be neat. I can see Magneto being the guy that arranged the assassination. The Vietnam Era would showcase a nice little Wolverine cameo

    Watergate.

Starting ten years later gives you a chance to shake up the cast.

Maybe it's just me, but I have a bad feeling about this. I don't think anyone expected X-men First Class to be as good as it ended up being. I don't think anyone expected the high praise from critics and fans alike. This is all well and good, but usually when this happens the studios tend to try and cash in while there's still buzz and in doing so they tend to rush things. Now having the cast on board already solves one of the problems that plagued X3, but in moving forward with this movie I worry that it may get sloppy like the later X-men squels did. I'm not trying to sound pessimistic here, but given the nature of the X-men movies I just have a sinking feeling that the sequel will mess things up.

That's all true, but considering it's a prequel set before those films, it is possible to branch off and "forget" the older films ever happened.

Just retain Jackman as Wolverine, in the same way Judy Dench remained "M" despite rebooting the Bond franchise from Brosnan to Craig. The Jackman cameo was probably a bad move to begin with.

I'm a fan of restarting this franchise in any way possible. All the continuity changes and errors that exist in X-Men through X-Men Origins REALLY make it impossible to give X-Fans and audiences what they really want.

In either case though, I'd like to see Magneto/Xavier patch things up for the time being and face another new enemy. Apocalypse, anyone?

Well in a way, it seems they do the Superman Returns approach were some movies are taken into account but other are ignores (namely those that were not well receive)

The best indicator of that is that Xavier is seen walking in Last Stand and Origins, but of course lost uses of his legs during First Class (basicly one say he was bald before he got paralyse and the other the opposite ) and his meltdown with Magneto take place early.
Has to remember his suggestion for the traitor game

Awesome news. Also, Jane Goldman mentioned in an LA Times artile this weekend that she would be up for scripting the film if Vaughn returned, so regardless of who was initially signed to write the thing I would expect Goldman and Vaughn to take a pass at the script, if not scrap it outright and start over prior to shooting.

Well in the comics we see Xavier in a wheelchair one minute while walking on two legs the next. I took it as his psychic powers having alot to do with that. Still the flashback with Magneto indicates that they somehow patch things up and are still scouting mutants. Or one could just assume that when Xavier and Magneto were recruiting mutants in First Class they happen to run into Jean Grey in the process.

This is exactly why I'd rather First Class be in it's own Universe instead of the previous films because the continuity is pretty messed up. Starting things over with just First Class would be a nice clean slate with the X-Men franchise

Well, Xavier was with Magneto when he was walking. It could be retconned that Magneto was manipulating some metal leg braces or somesuch. Just a thought.

The film continuity is no more messed up than the comics continuity (which, granted, isn't saying a lot). How many times have Magneto and the X-Men kissed and made up after Magneto tried to kill them all or committed some heinous act of mass murder/genocide? It's just part of the mythology. And, just like the comics, it is (to an extent) always incumbent on the reader/viewer to make the pieces fit in his/her own head.
