Fossil records show a species of nearly hairless apes who developed complex tool use and immediately turned to developing bigger and pointier sticks for killing each other with, which led to a decent amount of success subjugating other animals to keep for later eating... Right up until the entire species mysteriously vanished. Leading Equipologists believe they somehow managed to stupid themselves to death, or were possibly eaten by Windigoes.

Y'know, I still can't believe none of those protest groups that overreacts to things in the media all the time never picked up on Spiderman literally selling his unborn daughter's soul to the devil in order to get a divorce.

Apparently comics are just plain completely under the media's radar unless you kill off Superman or Captain America.

Also I've seen people who've negatively reacted to Mephisto showing up since then, which is kinda funny because even he was being written out of character to get the story where editorial wanted it to.

Really though, I think the reason why this stings so much for some people is because before then, Spiderman only had minor retcons. His character history was pretty much an unbroken line from the 60's right up to the Clone Saga, and only got a little confusing by comics standards after that.

I get really tired of people presuming that a distinctly non-omnipotent entity that can be trapped in a glorified candlestick is somehow capable of granting omnipotence just because he's either a powerful highly-versatile magic user or a low end reality warper.
