He doesn't like fragmenting discussion too much. He believes in less is more and focusing the topics.
Having a trades only board would take the discussion away from DC, Marvel, etc and make it a little confusing to new users.

Where is the harm in a trial run? If the forum doesn't generate enough posts or activity, just squash it and go back to the way things were.
The mods have to keep coming into various threads, especially the Marvel Omnibus thread, to keep discussions on track because people are veering into other topics that aren't on point of the specific thread, but would be on topic in a general "Collected Editions" forum.
And if you keep a general rule to discuss the contents/stories/quality of the writing of the books to threads in the appropriate other forums, things should be fine.
For example, something like a one off post saying "The Avengers The Crossing Omnibus is a waste because its such a bad story that doesn't warrant this oversized collection and oversized price tag," that would be fine in an Omnibus thread in the collected editions forum.
But a post (or a full discussion) going on about the plot and whatever about the Avengers "The Crossing" arc would be more appropriate for the Avengers forum, where other people could chime in since the discussion of the plot in this instance has no bearing on what format its collected in.
I'd think the absence of boards like this discourages discussion around collected editions. They would have so much more exposure. If visitors come to the boards and see there's no section for it, they'll just shrug and go somewhere else or not discuss it at all. Green Lantern, while that didn't go over, still had TONS more discussion than it does when grouped into the DCU forum. Collected editions are so much bigger than that.
Not only would this benefit the community, it would benefit the industry. It would allow companies to get feedback from fans regarding quality and content, which is sorely needed.
There are so many threads in several different forums discussing a wide variety of topics. A subforum would be perfect, since this is really taking off and is, dare I say it, the future of the industry.
While I'd love a collected sub-forum as much as anyone, Brandon gave a great explanation above of why now is not the time for it to exist:
The best case for the the Sub-Forum would be truly awesome, fast-moving, helpful conversation across our full set of current collection threads - Marvel, DC, and - err, an Indie thread I cannot seem to locate.
However, if we force the hand on the subforum now, by definition we would lose all of the awesome topical cross-talk we very much enjoy in both of those threads. Let's enjoy what we've got for the moment, and try to expand it in a naturally occureing way? Maybe we do need a binding thread or a shelf-porn thread - so, let's make them and see how they do.

So you're saying 3 threads merits a forum?

"If you build it, they will come" has never really worked for us.

You mean three threads that could easily be decompressed into literally thousands of threads with completely different topics that until now have been forced into a single thread per subforum, the main of which often goes on for hundreds of posts a day about everything from book binding structure to the quality of the latest omnibus?
I could go through the last 20 pages (or few days, since the thread moves so fast) of the Marvel HC and Omni thread and separate those out to at least 20 different interesting and separate topics which until now were mashed together in a confusing and obnoxious manner because admins don;t read the thread and understand just how many people are using it. Many of which (myself included) ONLY visit this forum for that thread.
Separating it out into its own forum would make the site more user-friendly, and would make it MUCH easier for fans of collected editions to talk.
Marvel cosmic needs Jim Starlin back. As long as he is prohibited from using the word 'myriad' ever again.

"Literally thousands"? Really?

I doubt 20 unrelated threads could be made. Overall the discussions boil down to a handful of topics. Shipping, binding, what people got recently, what individual's collections look like, and the actual content of the various books. Some of those have enough overlap to stay together. I fail to see how any of the current threads are confusing.
