General Omnibus/Hardcover Discussion

Just did another Bulk amazon order. 50 books. Mostly pre-orders of DH and marvel all the way till august but there was a few instock stuff as well, X-Force MPE and deadpool classics/way run.....

Also inbound will be a dozen atlas/golden masterworks I picked up off eBay for $35 each.

Eeep. Put me about 150 books behind on reading..... Plus puts alot of pressure on my bookshelves!

I thought I was bad! My books are backed up like crazy as I'm reading ASM 1-500 (currently on 162)

50! That sounds like so much fun. Also, having 150 books in the queue to read reminds me of the good old quarter bin days. Of course, I had a few boxes of individual issues when I'd splurge, not boxes and boxes of books.

Now this is awesome. I plan on doing this someday. I have read almost all 500, just not in a row. Maybe when I get Amazing Spider-man Volume 2 by Lee/Romita I'll give it a go.

Due to the significant price gaps between Amazon and my domestic online stores, I'm considering making my next omni purchase from them. Does any of the non-american fellas here have experiences of returning to Amazon.com? Since I know the risk, I'd like to get some info on this.

Also, let's say I order a few books with different release dates. Is the combined sum drawn from my card after the first book is shipped, or just the cost of that single book?

Amazon have first rate customer services. The only time I've had a damaged item rather than paying shipping back that sent me a new copy and kept the damage item. The couple of times I have had items gone missing they have sent replacements using expeditated shipping.

If the item has not arrived by their estimate they refund the shipping charges.

I always preorder my books along with an item or two that is already released which reduces the shipping costs. They then send those items in stock and only charge your credit card for those items that ship then ship the others and charge your card when they are released.

Yes, they do (in fact you just reminded me I have a package I need to send back to them!). It's relatively hassle-free. It's just the low level of consistency in their packaging that's bad.

The shipping costs back would have been more than the cost of the book so,it was not worth it for them worrying about it. Not sure if it is like that all the time, but they won't leave you out of pocket either way.

Most of my backlog are DH archives/Conan books, marvel masterworks/omnibus and a slew of visionaries/classics.... Essentially books that collect older material, I seem to keep up with current books reasonably well but that takes up all my available reading time...... I only get to read these older material volumes once in a while when I'm up to date on current stuff.

That's never happened to me and until now I've NEVER heard of it happening. I've ALWAYS had to send the original back first.

No, you have to send the damaged book back. However, they pay the shipping costs and will ship the replacement out right away. When my Thor omni came damaged I asked for an exchange and 36 hours later my new copy was at my door and I was emailed a shipping label to print that will let me ship the old book back for free.

Alright, maybe eBay's feedback ratings are worth checking before you buy something ...
I got my UXM Omnibus that I bought for $90+$10 shipping the other day and it was in WORSE shape than the description said. Its dust jacket was stuck to the book because it had some sort of sticky liquid on it and the book itself was torn at the top of the spine and the inside pages appeared to have been wet. The book is in terrible, terrible shape. So, I contacted the seller and asked for a PARTIAL refund. I didn't want to be nasty about it and I figured that would resolve any problems, and, even though I didn't want the book, I wasn't going to ask for a full refund from him. But, he shot me a nasty email back saying I should have asked for more pictures and that he would refund the cost of the book, but NOT the $10 shipping and he'd only refund the money AFTER he received the book in the mail.
So, I opened an eBay case against him. I should have known better when I saw his low feedback rating. EBay did rule in my favor in just under 30 minutes and sent me a message telling me to send the book back (with tracking info) for a FULL refund.
Now, I've got to send it back on Monday to get my $100 back. This is a lesson to buyers to really look at that feedback rating and beware if it is low.

I bought the variant full cover price ($65 or so) from my LCS. The prices I had seen online hovered around $45 or so, so I happily paid the "buying local" tax.

Man, Amazon has conditioned deluxe edition buyers in the worst way. It's really hard to look at prices of books at a local business and know you can find them 25-50% cheaper online. Prime shipping makes it that much harder..

I only buy locally now if the shop has something I can't get online for cover price and I can find it in the store. Or, if I am out and stop in at a comic shop and they have a trade paperback or hardcover that I want to read and need something to read over lunch or between jobs, I'll buy it there, even though I know I can get it cheaper online.

Not to be too punitive against the seller in this instance, but maybe you should share that seller's name so we don't have the same bad experience? How bad was this guy's rating anyway? Are you planning to share this experience on eBay so that eBay buyer's are aware of your experience?
