Songbird/Diamondback, there's a Thunderbolts thread and Songbird's own appreciation thread to discuss that.

Anyway, I'd probably mix it up with:
    • Invisible Woman
    • Storm
    • She-Hulk
    • Ms. Marvel
    • Spider-Man
    • Machine Man

Mostly female characters, but the two dudes there that are bound to have entertaining interactions (if Aaron Stack isn't yout thing, that slot could be a revolving door). The composition means things can be fun but it won't be discounted as a fluff book (all levity, no purpose or lasting change).

I think one of the main reasons DC is able to pull ahead with so many female-lead titles is the fact that all of the solo characters, bar Wonder Woman, are derivatives or related to a prominently featured, popular and publicly well known male super hero, in this case Superman and Batman. Catwoman, Huntress, Batgirl and Supergirl, have Marvel counterparts, to a degree, but not on the same recognizable level. Black Cat and She-Hulk would fall into this category, but big names like Iron Man, Thor and Captain America don't really have bankable female supporting characters or counterparts that could hold a series (though I'd be all for a Sif solo).

    Sorry, sorry. I'll retract it.

...then again, those three in their own book could be like Cap and the Avengers...huh.
That's the point. You can hook the Avengers fans with an Avengers title with women in leading roles.

Might work. I just hope they can branch out more from the Avengers stuff and into other territories.

Also, I guess we can expect a Jessica Jones book when her TV show hits.

Definitely. They don't have to fight staple Avengers enemies. They can have their own rogues gallery. They can go places the Avengers' men haven't. It would be fresh, it could be fun, and it would draw in men and women who like the Avengers franchise.

The X-franchise could do the same thing. They have experimented with the concept more than the Avengers seem too and their results showed some promise. Pixie had a decent mini series and that purple elf girl (forgot her name all of a sudden) might still be popular enough for book of her own.

the good thing with DC is that even if the sales of their female characters ongoing comics are not selling well, they don't cancel it right away or do a reboot.

It really doesn't mean marvel is not taking care of the women well. but they cold at least keep at least 2-3 female characters solo ongoing comics going.

Give 1 slot for Storm cos she hasn't been given the chance to have an ongoing but only mini series.

Maybe it's not that there needs to be a solo, but a Cable and Deadpool style book.

And do you mean Blink? That's not purple, she's hot pink. She just joined New Mutants. Though her Exiles form is much more popular. (Or was. Exiles is a dead franchise...)

I think a team book (at least 2 women) would be best. A C&DP style book would be great!

I meant Blink and yeah, she's pink. (Thinking about homework too at the moment.)

Shame about Exiles when that started I enjoyed it but lost interest after about 3 arcs into it.

That and when Clearemont got on, he basically killed the book.

Well, here's hoping they try something in the near future.

Yeah as I say a shame about Exiles but there you go lol.

As for team up books with two female characters I'd like to see a Ms Marvel and Spider-Woman book I think that'd be a good read.

Spider-Woman at least needs some writer to pin down a solid personality for her. That's the biggest hurtle for her I feel.

Agreed I'm no Bendis Basher by any means but I don't like his version of Spider-Woman in the Avengers books.

Although I did like the Origins solo book he did on her and the follow up to it.

Wonderful thread, Songbird/Diamondback! I am glad you started it. I have tons of ideas that I will post tomorrow.

I was discussing this with a friend. Currently, DC has Wonder Woman, Batwoman, Batgirl, Supergirl, Catwoman, Voodoo, Birds of Prey, and female-heavy Demon Knights. World's Finest, which features two female leads, is coming out soon. Even more, there are rumors that Powergirl, Huntress and Donna Troy will represent the Earth 2 Trinity...all female! Wowzers!

Marvel's has some bright spots (X-Men: Legacy, Generation Hope) but nothing that really compares.

As for the entire male-derivative aspect....

Some of those characters are not derivatives at all. They might have sprung from the Batman world, but they have their own individual powersets etc. These days, it seems many successful characters, female or male, come from a certain "world" Deadpool came from the X-World, Nightwing from the Batworld, etcetc. Derivative character can work when done right. Batwoman is a prime example.

As for sales, several female titles at DC have had runs that sold solidly, sometimes even better, for a good period of time. Right now, Wonder Woman, Batgirl and Batwoman are big hits. I believe there is a healthy chance they will continue to be. Birds of Prey is getting lots of critical respect and decent sales, and Catwoman is doing quite good saleswise. Supergirl is beating Superboy in sales!

I know that the DC Universe structure is different than Marvel's, but DC is showing that it can be done.

Supposedly some more female titles are on the horizon. Anyone have a guess to who? I can't really think of any female character who even has a launching pad right now. Valkyrie maybe? Scarlet Witch?
