Did Storm Steal Lorna's Spot?

Over the years I've noticed that diehard Polaris fans often harbor resentment toward Storm. Some of those fans still post here on this very forum! Crazy, right? Anyway, one such fan suggested that it's because Storm stole Lorna's rightful role within the ranks of the X-Men.

Do you agree?

Would Polaris be relevant if not for Storm?

Would she have the distinction of being married to Marvel's most beloved character whose books never get cancelled?

Would she still be slumming it with the other Summers brother?

What are your thoughts?

As one of the crazy Polaris fans I see this theory posted a lot in her appreciation thread. Don't agree with it all. As the first prominent female mutant of african descent in comic books Storm would always be extremely prominent. I don't think they have the same personality, the same connections. Nothing in common really except they are both "elemental females" and there are tons of those in marvel comics.

Before Storm came to the X-Men Lorna probably only appeared in 5 or 6 issues at the most. I doubt she was even that recognizable or important back then.

While I agree that as one of the first X-Men Lorna probably deserves more attention than she receives, Storm earned her spot on the A-list fair and square and is a far more interesting character. But unless there was some kind of quota for X-Women, then I don't how the two cancel each other out. They're nothing alike.

Lorna needs to move from beyond Alex's shadow, and more importantly get a redesign, before she can really climb the ranks. PAD will do great things for her, and under Emanuela Lupacchino's pencils she's already looking better than she ever has. I just wish she'd lose the green lipstick though.

I am of the belief that the characters create their own spot.

Thus, Lorna was never going to get that level.
