I remember an Avengers story where T'Challa got DD to help him rescue the rest of the team from the Zodiac. DD's plan is to dig out his "old Mike Murdock shades" and cause enough of a ruckus at Zodiac's public showing off of their victory that T'Challa can bust them loose.
The guy just can't HELP himself, can he?
Tim, the book should hopefully be on tracks to see publication by the end of the year. Essays are flying in - usually through my inbox and not via CBR - and it's all coming together really quite well.
This one looks like fun - but how can you not have fun writing about everyone's favourite Mike Murdock.
Ooh, there should totally be a spin-off mini about Mike Murdock right now. It could even be a MAX title. Golden.

old comics were cool because being fat could actually be a story. especially in those old superman or jimmy olsen issues! Marvel books seemed to have storys centered around a guy being wimpy or lame-using a cane- like Doc Donald Blake.
I spotted the Mike Murdock hat & shades in Matt's office in the first issue of the current series (still there in subsequent issues too) and thought it was a great little easter egg/nod back to those wacky days. It is amusing as to how gullible Foggy & Karen were about this and let us not forget that this is a Foggy who was being considered for the role of district attorney at the time!
U-Go Girl lives & Squirrel Girl is the nuts!
Great article! I always enjoyed the 'Mike' Murdock personality that Matt developed to cover his DD ID. Those were fun issues with still some great moments of drama--certainly they were far, far beyond anything Batman was doing in the same period. It would be nice to revisit those days and perhaps experience some 'untold' stories. Comics were fun in those days without being childish. I like that Waid has brought some of the fun back to DD while maintaining real drama.
Comics today could learn quite a bit about what to do today by really examining what was done then--a fluid mix of action, humor and drama in just the right mix. Today there is too much so-called 'reality'--too grim and gritty without little character moments that didn't just fill space but actually advanced the storyline.
One of my favorite moments in DD's history was when Matt revealed his identity to Karen Page--that was in the midst of what I consider some of the greatest issues of DD in his long history. Certainly better than Miller and Bendis IMHO.
I hope Waid can keep the action happening--thanks for stirring some great memories with your reflections on 'Mike.'
