I think you dodged a bullet there. I have no idea what JMS had planned for Doom, but I think it's better he never got to do it. Granted, Millar still got to eff up the character in his run, so Marvel probably just traded one for the other.

I give JMS credit for cleaning up some of the damage done by Waid's "Unthinkable" though.

Yes, ugh. I think Waid had a Hannibal Lector-ish take on Doom. The leather armor made from the skin of Valeria, his childhood sweetheart reminded me of the killer that Lector was helping Agent Starling track down. Waid also completed the destruction in Authoritative Action when Reed took over Latveria for a while, destroyed his stockpile of weapons, redistributed the wealth and then Doom pretty much had a suicide by cop sort of death scenario when he took over the Thing's body and forced Reed to kill him. It works as a Doctor Doom: The End story because he was left with absolutely nothing at the end.

I forgot to add that Reed even encouraged the citizens to take a knife to a portrait of Doom's mother when he opened up the castle for looting in "Authoritative Action". Which didn't make sense since it was a portrait of an older woman and Doom's mother was killed by Latverian soldiers when he was probably no more than 5. At the end of "Unthinkable", when the demons were dragging Doom off to Hell, he actually begged Reed to save him. It was like Waid wanted to completely destroy the character.

I think that while "Unthinkable" makes for a good Fantastic Four story it really sends Doom down a dark and unredeemable path. Much like what was done with Magneto by Morrison but then he got Xorneto'd.

It was part of the bargain with the demons. It order to get some power from them, he had to sacrifice something of value. So Waid brought back a character from the past just to kill her off.

I'd have to go back to it again but I recall liking the brief Wolfman//Buckler run also.

LOL..never heard of that one. Yeah, the Buffalo Bill part comes out of nowhere IMO. It just seemed so primitive which is why I referenced Lector. He's a brilliant man that commits cannibalism. Doom, a man of science ( and a bit of sorcery on the side at that point) skinning a human even mystically was just ...weird.
