Early "beta" copies have been sent out to a handful of reviewers, so hopefully I can get some solid feedback...
Well, I have one review in from Gustav Fitzpatrick, and here are some quotes:
"very well drawn"
"It told the story coherently and in a nice flow."
"[it] felt like an action movie"
"If that was your goal, you accomplished it completely."
"I liked the puns. The corniness put a smile on my face."
...and in interest of being honest, I would disclose if anything negative was said...but nothing negative was said, so that's good.

Review #2, by Edward Terwilliger
"I really enjoyed how the main character was a badass and a smartass at the same time. He really kept things fresh in my opinion."
"The story is honestly very well done.... very honest and did not pull any punches."
"I thought the weapons were badass."
"Would make a great action movie."
"I think people will enjoy it as much as I did."
Review #3, by William Tsueng
"Heavy Weapon is what it is: the quintessential '80s action movie that you watch over and over, just like in the good ol' days...only you don't have to worry about the VCR eating your tape."
"Reading it was akin to sitting down and watching a movie"
"I am most glad to have been able to read this"
"Overall I found it cheesy and fun, definitely like an '80s movie!"
"I'd like to see more of John. Here's hoping for a sequel!"
Nice reviews! Who are these people, and what did you do when you sent them copies? Did you just include a short press release letter?
I chose 8 random people out of those that posted in some of my threads (in this forum and others) who expressed interest in the book prior to the post where I said I was sending out "beta" review copies. I sent them all unfinished copies consisting of the first 20 fully completed pages, about 100 mostly completed pages ("un-inked"), and the last 30 or so were actually just in sketch form. Each book was in PDF form, watermarked with their name, and they signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement.
So, the comments/feedback they've provided me were actually from a very non-final version of the book as far as art goes, but the story and dialogue were pretty much final. I was a little surprised the reviews were so outstanding so far considering the state of the book sent to them (especially those last 30 pages). I still have a few reviews pending, so hopefully it's all good things.
I'm shooting for a December release if everything falls into place as planned. The book itself should be mostly finalized by Sept/Oct, then compiled and printed after that....hopefully.
good to hear some good reviews. Still can't wait and yet waiting...
We're working as fast as we can.Just trying to avoid sacrificing quality while trying to get it out this year, if possible. It's frustrating for sure.
Another review in!
Review #4 by John Bowlin
"Heavy Weapon has really outstanding black and white pencils that show a level of detail that really brings you into the story."
"...take all the 80's action movies and mash them together and BOOM! HEADSHOT! Add in a heaping helping of pop culture references and sadistic humor and what you have is a nice warm cup of blowing shit up."
"John Magnum cracks wise as good as he cracks skulls. He's like Rambo and Adrian Cronauer rolled together."
"Heavy Weapon entertains, and that is what its all about. Sure, you could buy another Spider-Man comic book, or you could buy something Marvel is too pussy to put out."
That's some very impressive work you've got going on, here. I'll give it a go![]()
Should be wrapping up the art here soon, and then on to the final lettering.
