Default CBR: Johns Wills Sinestro Power As "Green Lantern"

The relaunch of DC Comics CCO Geoff Johns' longest running title has brought a villain back from the dark side, and the writer tells CBR why Sinestro will stay a Green Lantern, clash with Hal Jordan and uncover the Indigo Tribe's secrets.

Johns is pretty good at giving a bit of creative thought, but in a very "keep reading" way interview. I'm digging the Hal & Sinestro show, and I'm so glad my curiosity about the Indigos is coming soon. Making it smaller and more streamlined is nice, but I honestly would like more shocking revelations and such in the title, more often. But I'm liking the character work, and comparing Sinestro to Magneto is apt. He really is basically the DCU Magneto equivalent.

It's funny too, that Sinestro's being critical of how Hal only uses the Power Ring to do the "super-hero" routine parallels the 70's Green Arrow/Green Lantern lectures, where Ollie wants shallow old Hal to get off his ass, see the social problems of the world and do something about them.

Ollie's a lefty, and Sinestro is a right-wing fascist. But they're both telling Hal the same damn thing.

I have to say the way Johns write Sinestro in this title is truly ironic genius. I mean it's fun seeing someone like Sinestro, knocked down a few pegs , become humbled and learn some humility and Humanity.

The interviewer missed the question I wanted answered though:

"Isn't it unfair that you get to continue your storylines unaltered post-Flashpoint, but everyone else is forced to cope with a new status quo?"

I've never been a regular Green Lantern reader (or DC reader for that matter), but I really have enjoyed the last four issues. It's very entertaining.

The answer to that is simple:

"No, because my title sold far better which was largely due to the storylines I created to help bring the character back to prominence."

Exactly why Grant Morrison got to continue his Batman Inc basically untouched (albeit with a delay). Also, the Bat-family remained relatively similar, despite a few costume changes.

I think Johns is one of those writers that is really creative and draws his readers in. Im really excited about the second ard with the indigo tribe and this whole third army thing.
Also, the only things I know about the indigo tribe is that it brainwashes ex murderers and make them compassionate.
I think its really interesting to explore the indigo tribe.

Followed up with, "Do you think Green Lantern will have more continuity problems than Hawkman did in a few years from now?"

We're already seeing them in GLC with Guy and Martian Manhunter's "first meeting".

I don't really see the Issue. GL looks the same on the Surface, But since none of the pre-flashpoint major Storylines could have happened the same way at all, under the surface its radically different.

so its as much of a reboot as anything else despite its appearance.

Ah yes. That would be why Dick is still Batman, right?

One could say GL continues unchanged because he was already rebooted and relaunched with "Rebirth"

And Batman had some rebooting going on under Morison's run, so you could say that they were both DCnU before there was a DCnU.

Ah yes. That would be why Dick is still Batman, right?
Is is said that Dick was never Batman, or just isn't anymore?

Cause Barbara was paralyzed but isn't anymore. So that's still there unchanged.

Edit: Damian is still there, Catwoman is the same. Batwing of Africa. Batwoman and Flamebird.

The real answer would be "no because since 2003 I've spent my time revamping and fleshing out the continuity of the Green Lantern franchise making them the most accessible DC books for new readers all while telling popular and critically acclaimed stories that brought readers in".

It would be so needless to change Green Lantern. That would just be change for the sake of change. Same with Batman. Grant Morrison spent a good chunk of his run justifying every Batman story that was ever created so that his books were accessible for all readers from the get go.

On the otherhand Superman's had a convoluted continuity for well a decade and writers have been going back and forth changing it every step of the way. It needed something stable. And the Teen Titans franchise was unbelievably broken and not selling well that they needed a major overhaul. By comparison.
