i have all the single issues, but i want this now.

i might just sell them and then get this, i'm starting to like HC's way more than the single issues.

Well first I gotta advise you not to sell those issues! But if you decide to, drop me a line

Don't the early USM issues go for big money?

Just finished #7 and damn this stuff is good. I was curious to see what it was that got people to accept an alternate Marvel universe and it makes sense now. Seeing Peter becoming Spider-Man and having all the crazy discoveries and excitement that I always thought about when I wondered what it would be like are there. Amazing Fantasy #15 and the early ASM issues were amazing in their time, but they were tasked with having to produce Spider-Man in action immediately and there was no room for subtlety. Bendis was given the task of retelling Spider-Man's origin to people who already knew Spider-man was awesome. He knew that was an opportunity to tell the story more elaborately. I'm loving this. After reading the first 7 issues I find it completely unacceptable that the first set of Spider-Man movies were done so poorly. All they had to do was imitate this.

I realize what I'm excited about right now is 12 years ago for a lot of you guys but I just had to talk about it.

No, it's good you share your thoughts with us.

It fun for us old Ultimate readers to hear new readers talk about the same stories we fell in love with.
It's a way for us to relive how we felt when we read those stories.

    Keep it up

Was there a letter column in USM originally? If so, are the letters in the omnibus?

There were letters but the only omnibuses to include letter columns are the silver age ones.

I don't have any non-Miles USM in print so yes I would actually get this.

Also, how is omnibus pronounced? I say omni - like omney and bus as in magic school bus.

Just finished the 13th issue and the kingpin story arc has ended. How did it take 12 years for me to read this? This stuff is great. I was hoping to see M.J. say "face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot" and I was a little worried that she hadn't said it yet, but she finally said it and it was done perfectly.

If it hadn't been for this Omnibus release I may not have been inspired to read the story from the very beginning. I may have just settled with Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1 as a starting point.. but that would have been a crime. Now I'm fully prepared to read a decade of comics. Looking like I'll be buying them in paperback though.. I'm not waiting for the next Omnibus to come out after I finish this.

It is 1:30am, I just woke up and my sister was in the john getting ready for bed so I went to Plan B and stepped out onto the back porch. What did I find waiting for me? The goddamn Ultimate Spider-Man omnibus. Extremely shoddily wrapped (the packaging was basically a cereal box refolded into an envelope) but I didn't care because it wasn't due until next week. I kind of terrifies me that it would have been out there all night without me knowing and I'm a little upset that there is some slight crumbling at the top of the spine (its so slight that I doubt I would get any money back from it so no point crying over spilled milk) BUT when I opened it up all of that went away. I realized that I've been waiting for this book longer than I've been reading comics. I started reading comics regularly in 2008 but I bought my first ever issue of Ultimate Spider-Man (#59) in 2006 and I sporatically went back to the comic book store to buy more back issues whenever they had a full arc (as in the interim between my first and second issue I'd learned about writing for the trade). Since I had no options for reading the series in full I did the next best thing: I went to Spiderfan.org and read the detailed synopsis for every issue up to that point. It was like second-hand comic reading. I did it for the Stan Lee-Steve Ditko run a few years earlier after Spider-Man 2 came out.

Anyway, the point of this ramble is I have wanted this book for a long time. The idea of having these stories in such a nice collection was just like mind porn to me. I knew about the B&N collection but wasn't really interested because there was no Volume 2 and I had a feeling there never would be. Then this beast was solicited and I got real excited real fast. And from holding this book in my hands I can say it was perfectly justified.

First off, the cover. I got the Quesada cover and it really looks great. Yeah its not Bagley but I've always loved the extreme perspective on that cover. Then underneath the dustjacket you have the red imitiation leather, like the Untold Tales omnibus, but with silver stamping rather than blue. Theres a huge fat logo die-stamp on the front cover that covers almost the entire width of the cover. It looks great. The end pages are red and I think I would have preferred blue like with Untold Tales but here I am complaining about the end pages! At any rate, red or blue it doesn't matter because both are accepting of autographs and sketches (getting Bagley to sketch a Spidey or GG is my new long term comics goal). Then I open book and I am amazed. This book opens flatter than any other omnibus I own. I checked to see if the spine was broken and nope, its just very very flexible. I didn't realize it until today but simply avoiding gutterloss is a big enough incentive to buy this book instead of trades. The oversized format and nice paper just rocks Bagley's art as well. I flipped to the end to check out the bonus features and found nearly fifty pages and its not all of it was variant covers like many other modern day omnibuses. This one has tons of outlines, emails and other great stuff talking about the creation of the series in addition to some great artistic material as well.

So seriously, what can I say? I mean, my comic hating sister looked at it and said "Wow, thats actually really nice!" All I can really say is this was 100% worth the money, I'd probably have paid cover price for it if I had to and the presentation and packaging are perfect.

Until they publish a Punisher MAX omnibus this will be my favourite omnibus. Punisher is the only thing I can imagine beating it.
