Default What Sean Murphy Has Turned Down Lately

I stumbled across this on Sean Murphy's deviant art journal:

"The other reason why I'm feeling so much anxiety is that I've had to turn down a ton of good work in order to do PRJ. Here's a quick list of what I've turned down:

    -another Grant Morrison book
    -a Mark Millar book
    -a James Robinson book
-Batman and Detective Comics (about 7 times)
    -Swamp Thing
    -Hellboy
    -a Dr. Strange mini series
-a Spider Man 2099 one shot
    -work with Todd McFarlane
-an "Assassins Creed" redesign with Ubisoft
    -3 European publishers"

I wondered why he wasn't among the New 52 artists, and apparently, they wanted him to, but he opted to do a creator-owned project (good for him!)

That said, I would have loved to see him on Snyder's Batman or Morrison's Batman Inc. (Or maybe even something for Multiversity?!)

Also, Hellboy. Oh god, I would have loved that.

Awhile ago he had a similar post saying that he'd gotten a bunch of requests to work mainstream books, like Batman or what not but he turned them down in favor of stuff like American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest. More into creator owned stuff, which you can't hate on. He's a fantastic artist, I read Joe the Barbarian recently and was blown away. If he ever found the time and wanted to make the jump to some more "mainstream" stuff, I'd gladly welcome it, but what he draws now is awesome as well.

Hell, I actually looked up this post and saw what date it was, might have been the same post Im thinking of haha. But anyways, I loved this line "And American Vampire has been the best experience I've ever had with another writer." As if Scott Snyder apparently needed more backing to his "nicest dude in comics" reputation he's gotten fairly quickly, haha.

I'm not quite sure how well suited he'd be for Batman, I'm sure he would kill it, but I'm willing to bet there would be something that's even a greater fit for him in the DCU.

He has some good Batman drawings on deviant art, and technically, Batman was in "Joe the Barbarian."

At any rate, I look forward to his next project, "Punk Rock Jesus."

Same, Joe the Barbarian and AmVamp: SotF has made me an instant fan of his, will pick up anything he draws. Does it even have a release date/publisher yet?

I would love to see SGM on a Bats run. I believe he is designing his own Batman Black & White Statue though, so at least there is that.

    I don't know, man--the pin-ups he's done look pretty damn good:

That being said, if he wants to do creator-owned stuff instead, I certainly can't begrudge him, and I hope he has the best of luck.

I'm kind-of glad he wants to do his own stuff. Too many good artists get trapped inside the corporate structure these days, and a book with Grant Morrison is as good a place as any to launch yourself into doing creator-owned stuff, especially since I imagine the two are in touch still; I imagine it would be pretty cool to bounce ideas off a guy like Morrison.

Yeah, if Morrison wants you specifically on a book, then calls back, you know you're good. Morrison's got that stable of artists he likes to go to, so if you're one of those, you know you're in some good company.

I wouldn't want him messing with Batman because Capullo is just too damn good, but wouldn't it just be dream if he took over 'Tec or better yet The Dark Knight?!? I guess it's kind of a comfort to hear that Daniel's wasn't the FIRST guy DC went to for 'Tec.
Favorites: Animal Man, Batman, Batman Beyond unlimited Frankenstein: Agent of Shade, Demon Knights American Vampire, Sweet Tooth, Daredevil, Amazing Spider-Man, Secret Avengers.

Not really, because there's nothing incredibly wrong with Daniel's art or Finch's art in their respective books, to be frank. The writing is the major problem.

Yeah, I am super torn between him doing a Batman book and a creator-owned thing. Well, he's young, so there's plenty of time to do superhero stuff. Punk Rock Jesus sounds incredible. Check out his journal. He's a pretty cool guy.

Nah, I'd rather not waste him on books that don't have writers.

So if this is how you feel about company-owned superhero comics, why are you in a DC forum?

I like reading Batman comics, but I love reading a creator-owned book like Hellboy. It's possible to like superhero stuff and be excited when a great talent like Sean Murphy drops the mike to pursue his muse.

Of course. I like a lot of creator-owned stuff as well. But is it possible to like company-owned superhero fiction and also feel this way about company-owned superhero fiction?
