18. "Holy Terror," by Frank Miller
To rate this book higher than Hellboy, Daredevil or Detective Comics doesn't do this list's value a favour.
Geniusboy Firemellon, I could b****slap you across the Internet for placing Hellboy above I, Zombie.
I understand that Kevin Nowlan's art is sublime. I understand that Duncan Fegredo's Art is beautiful. I love Richard Corben's art too. BUT, art alone is insufficient to keep one's interest in a comic. At least for rational people. Art-o-philiacs can overlook something as essential as plot.
Chris Roberson's writing a fantastic overarching story in I, Zombie and Mike Allred's art is amazing. They have fill-in artists like Gilbert Hernandez and J. Bone.
The Hellboy stories are mediocre AT BEST. The aliens cutting a human and cow in half and then sewing opposites together? It was meant to be funny. It just ended up boring. And the climax of the Hellboy vs Ogdru Jahad, was incredibly underwhelming. It was as pointless as the demise of "The Four" from Planetary. All build-up. No Cattle.
Holy Terror.
Yet another example of putting art over story. Visually, it's very interesting but come on. You said it on Twitter, you're probably never going to read it again.
OMAC? better than Snyders run on Detective???
Snyders run not even in the top ten?
Pffffft!![]()
I know it's a Marvel book and therefore inferior, but, I really hope Journey into Mystery is in the top tenThe art has been, for the most part, beautiful. And even when it wasn't, Gillen's excellent story-telling abilities made it one that shouldn't be missed. I mean, this was the book that MADE Marvel's otherwise forgettable Fear Itself bearable to me as a reader.
Had to stop reading IMMEDIATELY when I saw this clueless chucklehead leave the most complex display of sequential storytelling ever produced (Habibi) on the sidelines while celebrating the execrable-in-every-way Holy Terror.
Increasingly, I question why I bother to visit this mouthpiece-for-the-mainstream site at all.
Looking for a colorist? Ask me about my availability! My work has appeared in comics from Image, Ape Entertainment, IDW and others: http://zepsloan.deviantart.com/
Wheee!!!
Rhymer -- You are wrong.
Batmite --- You open with an insult because you disagree with a list I made? Classy! I guess you win this round! (And I may never read "Holy Terror" again, but I don't read many comics again. I have new stuff to read every single year!)
Bugalugs -- Yes, OMAC is good. Have you read it? (Are you supposed to be sticking your tongue out at me? Are you three?)
Rosebunse -- Portacio's art is terrible, but I do like what Gillen's doing in that book. Not enough for it to make my list, though. But Cheers to Kieron Gillen!
I'mAWheel -- I don't know. Is someone forcing you to come here and say ridiculous things? Otherwise, please feel free to leave and never return. You will not be missed.
Oh, I love the level of discourse in the comic book community! Keep it up, gang!
You should see the level of discord in the manga forums. You want to see something fun? Get technical with the Naruto fans. Or say that Bleach is better in a One Piece forum. Or say that Naruto is a classic while most of Ghost in the Shell is overrated crap. Yes, I said what needed to be said, Ghost in the Shell is really not that much better than Naruto. I feel free for some reason
And I think Portacio made JIM somewhat less of a book, but he's not going to be doing the art for a while. It did kinda work for an issue.
Dear Mr. So-Called Comic Book "Expert,"
(The word "Expert" is in quotation marks as a sign that I question your qualifications as such and hold you and your asinine opinions in contempt.)
Over my lunch hour, I read your list of the alleged "Best" comic books of the past year and I nearly choked on my lobster tail in shock. (As a very wealthy man I often indulge in a lunch of lobster tails soaked in draw butter. My cardiologist objects, but he changes his tune once I take out my checkbook and draw him a map to buried treasure on the back of a deposit slip. He's quite a dreamer.)
How can a list of the "best" comics of the year not contain the exact comics I enjoy, ranked in the same order I would rank them? It's like I wasn't even consulted prior to publication. Never in my life have I felt so helpless. Over the year I have been a guest at many swank dinner parties and charity luncheons and, at every one, other guests, knowing that I consider myself a comic book enthusiast, will ask me to rate the top books of the year. Your list bears no resemblance to the selections I mentioned in passing to strangers and casual acquaintances! What if they were to read your column? Have you even thought of that? No doubt they would question my comic book knowledge and wonder if I have even read a comic book at all. Despite my claims to fabulous wealth, knowledge of comic books is all I have. Without that, I am nothing. Your contrary opinions have turned be into a pariah. The holiday invitations have already slowed. I expect they shall soon stop altogether. Financial ruin is sure to follow. I hope you are happy.
I suggest you amend your list to better reflect my tastes. Failure to do so will result in swift legal action. You have been warned.
Kudos for having gigantic balls of steel and placing not only Holy Terror on this list, but also GANGSTA RAP POSSE!!!!![]()
Batmite, I wouldn't tell too many people that you think iZombie is better than Hellboy. But I can accept a difference in opinion. Some people don't like Chaplin and many people love Adam Sandler. Some people prefer Dane Cook to Bill Hicks. Whatever. The world needs ditch diggers too.
That the author of this list left Habibi out of a 30 candidate 2011 shortlist, and left in Holy Terror, tells me far more than I wanted to know about his background, his parents' level of education, his politics and views on other cultures.
Whee? Mmm... indeed. 'Go banana.'
Habibi is in the honourable mentions which means it didn't make it into the top 30 for 2011.
The list is actually good and with many pieces of interest, except for the superhero stuff. Action Comics, Skeleton Key was a little above average, and if anything only highlighted how most superhero titles are way below average as most of the others were dreck
And there were several choices that I have already read on the basis of one of Tim's highly enthusiastic reviews.
But Holy Terror instead of Habibi? How often does a Habibi come along?
