Liu is fantastic. And if this is her team, I will definitely be buying this book.

Liu on a team book is pretty exciting news, indeed. I look forward to checking it out.

I like the make-up of the team. Glad to see some underused characters getting used.

    But why Wolverine yet again?

And what is the reason this particular team exists? Post-Schism there's a reason each book's particular team exists.

Uncanny has Cyclops' Extinction Team. X-Men has his recon/security team. New Mutants are there to clean up loose ends. Generation Hope is about finding the new mutants. Wolverine & The X-Men is about the school. X-Men Legacy is about protecting the school. X-Force is the black ops missions. X-Factor's role is less defined but the book isn't "just throw some mutants together".

So what is the purpose of this team?

Okay, so they just gave a role, but isn't it what Legacy is about?

Also, this just set off my "uh oh" radar. I HATE HATE HATE when creators deliberately ignore continuity because they don't want to deal with it.

Liu and Perkins said that Mr. Sinister won't be involved and Gambit's Marauders ties won't be mentioned. "I don't plan on spending a lot of time on it. That's not the focus of the story."
It's fine that Gambit's history with the Marauders isn't the focus of the story, but it does/should be mentioned.

That's what I'm asking myself. Looks like another redundant team book.

    Read it to find out.

She's a pretty solid comics writer but her main career is writing Romance novels so that kind of slips in sometimes if you ask me but her books are generally pretty good.

Really stoked for this, sucks that she's not on one of my favourite Books anymore though due to it's cancellation.

EDIT: Also stinks that she's not having X-23 in the book.

Astonishing X-Men is just a book that you don't have to read the others to get. A lot of folk can appreciate a more or less self contained story.

    Where did it say that?

The article said that it was very much tied into Wolverine's side and the roles they play at school.

Nothing about it being stand-alone or self-contained.

This book isn't as self-contained as people say. The current arc is heavily influenced by Schism, the people only reading AXM shouldn't need to know about the split, but it's a major part of that arc.
Astonishing X-men WAS a book that you don't have to read the others to get, now it's just a secondary book that can't seem to find a clear direction OR purpose. Let's hope they get it right this time, but I have no faith this direction will last any longer than the others.

That's what Astonishing X-Men has always been. And Self Contained does not mean out of continuity. It takes place on Wolvie's post schism side but it more or less will do it's own thing like Astonishing always has.
