Nice! But Santa doesn't like it when you shake the gifts before Christmas!

Question: I don't really know much about this, but have noticed there is a huge preference by people in CGC over PGX graded comics. I was wondering why this is the case, and if a 7.0 CGC Defenders #3, for example, is similarly valuable to a PGX 7.0 Defenders #3?

To say there is a preference is a huge understatement. CGC is the only industry accepted professional grader. At best a PGX holder can be looked at as a display case, and many collectors like myself put more trust in a raw comic than in a PGX holder. When I see a PGX holdered comic for sale I immediately view the seller with schepticism. It gives me the impression they're trolling for a novice who doesn't know the difference.

They notoriously way overgrade and miss (or ignore) problems like restoration. I have also seen quite a few accusations of very shady business practices, which I won't repeat since I don't have first hand knowledge.

This is why many online dealers won't accept returns for CGC graded comics, but do offer a return policy for raw or PGX graded comics.

Right now CGC has a reputation monopoly. With coins it's different. You have three that are widely accepted - PCGS, NGC (the coin division of CGC), and ANACS. There are two others that are somewhat accepted, and the rest are considered "boiler room graders," which is how PGX is viewed.

On those Signature Series, are they 9.8 (as opposed to 10) because of the signature?

I don't really know anything about CGC. Whats the differences between blue label , gold label , universial and signature (beyond autographed comics) ?

GOLD / YELLOW is for signature series books
A BLUE is a standard label for just about any book.
A GREEN is for an incomplete book
A PURPLE is for a restored book.

When they first started there were some brown labels, it's the same as a blue just a book that was graded a long time ago.

    I think that's about it...

Green is a "qualified" book, which includes (but is not limited to) being incomplete. Married pages and covers, unwitnessed signatures, cut out coupons and other problems can also end up with a green label.

Common slang for purple and green labels is GLOD "green label of death" and PLOD because they seriously devalue book over a blue problem free comic of the same grade.

To get the yellow label the signing must be witnessed or obtained by an authorized CGC rep - no exceptions.

For signature series the signatures have no affect on the grade. If those were 10.0 they'd be worth insane money. I don't think there's any 10's of any of those comics on the census, but I'd have to look.

10's are more common with comics made from more robust materials, but there are alway very few or none.

This is one reason I would probably not use CGC for a number of my comics. I don't really have an issue with this policy -- it does make sense, what with the possibility of forged signatures -- but since I personally had all my comics signed, I wouldn't take very kindly to them being "devalued" by a green label. Not that I plan to sell my signed Avengers #1 anyway, but it would be very irritating to me.

I do have some unsigned comics on the other hand I have considered sending in to CGC for one reason or another but concerns over the cost of the service and safety of shipping the books have so far kept me from doing so.

I wouldn't worry too much about the shipping and such. Also if you do it through a dealer you get a discount. You can also get a few books mostly free when you join their club for a fee. It's a deal if you look into it.

Scott - you could go through Ted from Superworld and he'll help you out. He's in Holden, MA.

As for a "devaluing" - that's not something you'd have to worry about if the book is for YOU anyhow. Plus, you can always crack it if you wanted. Your Stan signed book wouldn't be GREEN, it would likely be a blue labels with a comment on the label "Stan Lee written in pen on inside cover" because the book is complete and still unrestored.

I've bought a handful of CGC books because they were either a deal or I wanted to know the book I was spending boku $$$ on was NOT restored.

oooh, another thread to lurk in

This is the one category I disagree with in CGC's grading. A near flawless book with one significant flaw becomes a VG in my opinion...not a 9.6 with a qualified green label.

They also 'qualify' signatures on books which weren't witnessed by their reps. I can understand that one...but still trust signed books from a few other sources, eg Dynamic Forces.

But by and large, I do appreciate the nitpicking they put into grades.
