Do people consider Vertigo titles independent? I always considered them a branch of DC.

Most people wouldn't consider them indie comics since they are published by DC. Some may consider them indie in terms of not following the norm at DC/Marvel.

    This is shameless self-promotion but...

My comic, EDGE OF THE UNKNOWN, is an indy comic (self-published) about Harry Houdini and Arthus Conan Doyle as they get drawn into investigating a series of brutal murders, in 1920's Hollywood.

We got some nice reviews, including:
"Quite a feat. Catchy high concept and well-plotted out. Recommended!" -Comics Should Be Good (here on CBR)

The next volume is on kickstarter right now, where you can also order the first volume.

Other Indy comics I can recommend: anything by Yoshihiro Tatsumi, Seth, Chester Brown, Al Columbia, or Charles Burns.

I think people mean Vertigo because its creator owned series mostly just like if a writer went to Avatar,Archaia Studios,Dynamite to write his own series.

My wife and I have been really enjoying Saga, and highly recommend it! I also cannot say enough good stuff about Peter Panzerfaust.

Anyways, I'm looking for a really good indie book, new or old. I'd prefer it to have a more mature tone. Any suggestions?

Also, it doesn't have to be made by Image.
Much of the original run of Mirage's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Volume 1 may appeal to you. The tone and vibe is VERY different from the cartoons that came later. There is a more grounded, almost "depressing" vibe from the books in that lend to their fantastic elements.

If you're looking for newer, give anything my Ed Brubaker a shot. His current ongoing, Fatale, is great, and his previous work, Incognito, was a nice take on the pulp, noir superhero genre.
