Do people consider Vertigo titles independent? I always considered them a branch of DC.

This is shameless self-promotion but...
My comic, EDGE OF THE UNKNOWN, is an indy comic (self-published) about Harry Houdini and Arthus Conan Doyle as they get drawn into investigating a series of brutal murders, in 1920's Hollywood.
We got some nice reviews, including:
"Quite a feat. Catchy high concept and well-plotted out. Recommended!" -Comics Should Be Good (here on CBR)
The next volume is on kickstarter right now, where you can also order the first volume.

Poison Elves- ended a few years ago (creator passed away)- but still one of my favs of all time...dark, mature, and snarky.
My wife and I have been really enjoying Saga, and highly recommend it! I also cannot say enough good stuff about Peter Panzerfaust.
At this moment, I'm getting all of the valiant comics and saga -- I suggest you do, too!
I don't know if your into this but the lastest Flash Gordon comic is just awesome! I also recommend the Shadow (but skip the annual,it wasn't that good).
I'd offer up to you "TALK!" -> Its not currently released but pls check out the link below for some samples and more info

Blacksad
Much of the original run of Mirage's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Volume 1 may appeal to you. The tone and vibe is VERY different from the cartoons that came later. There is a more grounded, almost "depressing" vibe from the books in that lend to their fantastic elements.
If you're looking for newer, give anything my Ed Brubaker a shot. His current ongoing, Fatale, is great, and his previous work, Incognito, was a nice take on the pulp, noir superhero genre.
