I prefer the characteristics of the Eddie version, the only reason I kinda wished he had played it...

    That was one big Twinkie.

Although I seem to recall in the novelization, Winston was a marine. And they did make him a doctor for the video game.

Nobody else from SNL has that many classics. Also note that Eddie starred in each of those and wasn't just a supporting actor or writer.

A Ghostbusters discussion? Time to step in!

Yeah, not only was Eddie supposed to be Winston, but he was supposed to be a former Marine with multiple advanced science degrees, thereby making him the more effective than the other three combined. When Eddie dropped out, Winston's role was reduced and introduced midway through to show how much the original three were being overwhelmed. It's largely unofficial that Winston's still a marine, but many people and spin-off media go with that. The game had him earn his PhD in Egyptology soon after the events of GBII as well.

For the Real Ghostbusters cartoon, he was the team's layman (Peter being too uncommitted to translate technobabble for the audience, like in the movies) and crack-shot. While the first two seasons saw the Ghostbusters functioning well enough character wise with established but various roles (ie, while Ray was the team mechanic, the other three fairly decent mechanics themselves), execs wanted specific functions for each one for the third season. Egon the brains, Ray the heart, Peter the mouth. The execs wanted Winston to be the driver. How's that for bringing things back to the thread topic?

On a side note, I have the game and used to play the online multiplayer religiously. You can play any of the four, or the Rookie (the main character of the game), who is a young white male. A maximum of four people can play a match simultaneously. I bring this up because oftentimes when there are four random players, but Ray, Egon, and Peter are already chosen, more often than not the fourth player will choose the Rookie instead of Winston. I'm a purist, so I like seeing the original four together, but it's happened enough times to make me notice. Additionally, you can see what the other players are choosing, so you can see the fourth player take his time trying to pick between Winston and the Rookie, sometimes dwelling on Winston for a few seconds before quickly choosing the Rookie. I try not to read into it (it's not like I can see who the other three players are at their homes), but when it comes to choosing between Winston and the Rookie, 70% of the time Winston gets no love.

To be fair , Eddie's role was likely gonna be as big as John Belushi was gonna be as Peter. Dan wrote that film for his friend to play in with him. So yes I think Eddie would have had a big role...but look who was the film was being written for . All 3 would have gotten time for sure.

It does surprise me that people are forgetting Dan Akryod wrote the movie as a vehicle for him and John Belushi basically.

Oh, I've no doubt that Eddie's choice played a large role in how the movie ultimately developed. But Ernie is cheaper and less well known than Eddie, and getting someone like him means being able to reduce a character's screen time.

The comic has a nice little shout out to that fact: when Ray has one of his ghost dreams again, he seeks advice from the spirit of someone who looks suspiciously like Joliet Jake Blues.

That's because they didn't let him be a good Ghostbuster. If they had given him a Ghostbuster pack and said go be a good Ghostbuster, he would have been a good Ghostbuster!

Anyone want to give the next line?

    .
Possibly , we also have to factor in how they handed the role to the guy winking above (lol) Bill Murray. You have to wonder in the timeline where Eddie dropped out of doing it , when Belushi died and they changed course with it .
