"the queer community" is generally considered positive in a reclaiming of the term sort of way.
but some one ranting about "them (or 'dem around my neck of the woods ) queers" is obviously heading for trouble.
But there has been a movement in the LGTB community to reclaim queer.
It is undergoing the process of being semantically overturned by the very people who would typically be maligned with the insult, as some now use it as a political and celebratory statement of difference in an attempt to 'reclaim' the word.
And use of the word queer also refers to sexual preferences usually not considered mainstream; hence queer theory in academia and all that (and use of the word 'queer' to describe certain areas of study would lend credence to the attempt to 'reclaim' the word).
And actually, you're right about it depending on context.
The epistemic, physical, linguistic and social context(s) do come into play when using the word queer.
If it's being used in academic circles to describe an area of film studies, chances are it's not going to be used as an insult.
If someone asks Johnny if he's queer because he's walking with gay boys? That's something else.
Of course not. Atheists are seen in the same light to modernists as Christians view Harvey.
For the record..the Bible itself condemns homosexuality so its pretty glib to charge that Harvey is a bigot. Its more accurate to say he is a religious fundamentalist or zealot. IE I say this..because he did not come to condemn anyone by his own accord but is following Christian, Muslim or Jewish tenet.
But that is a bugaboo even the most ardent liberal dogmatic wont touch.
That is why I lament the rise of Ignorant labeling. Such as RACIST or BIGOT. TO my mind a racist or bigot is someone who thinks one race or group is superior to another..and enacts behaviors detrimental to another person--especially violence.
I could care less if someone doesnt like me because of my race..as long as I receive equal pay, health care, and civil liberties. Now, it has been warped to mean every little prejudiced whatever. It really has watered down the brand.
Also I dont see why Harvey gets special attention...i mean lets look at Mitt Romney and Mormonism.
In their Faith - Blacks couldn't return to dwell with God in the afterlife in Mormonism before 1978. And they were doomed to hell and considered soulless.
To date i havent heard Romney characterized as a monster the way Harvey had (for having his views).

Moreover I think that kind of moving the goalposts is deliberate so as to avoid taling about real problems.
Steve Harvey sneering at athiests or thinking Gay marriage is a bad idea isn't the same as getting dragged to death behind the back of some manaic's car.
Or for a less extreme example, it isn't the same as being repetedly screwed out of jobs you are qualified for, either.
See that is what I do not get about Christians that are VIOLENT towards homosexuals. It is true that the bible does speak negatively about homosexuality but there is nothing in there condoning Christians being violent about it. Maybe I'm too much of a mythology nerd but most deities have patterns of behavior. God is a deity that expects rules to be followed. Sometimes the rules change. God's people may be expected to go to war on one occasion, and they may have to march around a city a few times and toot horns on the next, but God expects it to be done. And if God didn't tell you to do it regardless of intentions don't bother. Good intentions didn't help the poor soul that tried to save the Ark from falling or King Uzziah from becoming a leper after burning incense in the temple. So I don't see how they think negative intentions will gain them favors with this foolishness.
There are a lot of good things in the BIBLE, as well. Unfortunately people pick and choose..what to follow.
Ive read it cover to cover. And what I gleaned was t0 love one another. Treat others as you wish to be treated. Love God.
But thats me.
