Not what I meant, o ye unobservant one. Look at the name of the book. Specifically the last word. Now imagine it was a book made up entirely of people of a duskier hue.

I think that there might be a possible middle ground solution. Instead of the publishers and editors mandating/telling the creators to make the books more racially diverse, why not either ask,encourage,or suggest to them to make the books more racially diverse. They could also do some research into many of their existing lesser known minority characters and shop them around to creators to see if they have any interest in using those characters. For example, John Wraith and Nick Fury JR would fit in nicely with SECRET AVENGERS.

A book that hilariously enough dropped the two minority members off the team in Shang Chi and War Machine, the draw back is the infamous quote from Hickman himself when he said he wasn't comfortable writing people of color( which is funny that either he got comfortable or someone told him to GET comfortable )

Can you imagine the uproar though if Justice League Dark was all black people?

They'd cry fowl but if it was good they'd ignore it like they do with Batwing

Dunno, I remember there was a time when Priest was trying to get the rights to the book with Doc Bright. No idea what happened there.

I don't really follow that title but Zatanna is Latino so that's somthing, that book really deals with monsters though?

I know in one of the interviews about the Valiant comics come back someone brought it up and the comment was that it's been discussed internally before and is still ongoing. If they bring it back into print then they pretty much have my money right then and there

I don't think that the creators of Young Justice and Ultmate. Spider man had to ne forced to field a diverse cast.

It just is Interesting that the dudes who create the books almoat never have the same mindset.

When given that option you'll notice that minority characters are never added, a key example would be DC's Justice League Dark. They have several magic users who are of different ethnicity yet that entire team is is white with no desire to add any characters of color and it's not like the fan base for that comic is even saying anything

Jeff Lemire is adding Dr. Mist to the line-up of JL: D, so there is some progress on that front.

It's not that you don't agree you're kinda just ignoring it. And we're doing that thing again where you're asking folks to accept scraps. Give me more than just three heroes.

Imma just put this out there. There's just people out there that just don't have the faculties to perceive these types of racial inconsistencies.(Ignoring, or thinking it's the norm so it's ok etc..)

The entire cast of characters got screwed over by a story idea spinning out of control. What made the Matrix so good was completely lost in the two sequels. So every character suffered in the sense of becoming more 2D, more bland and less interesting. The "forced philosophy" is more about the first Matrix film had lots of philosophical ideas in it, but VERY subtle ones; ones (I personally believe) the writers stumbled into... and once that became "a thing" of the first (in the media/review, etc), they tried to replicate it in the second two by having philosophical debate scenes, which felt forced. If that makes sense?



I don't agree minority characters get marginalised. Just because a minority character isn't CURRENTLY Cyclops or Captain America; doesn't mean that "therefore" they are marginalised. Comics are more than just "the big three". Black Widow, Wasp and Luke Cage have led the Avengers. Storm used to be THE X-man, when she took over leadership. It's swings and roundabouts. No characters stays "top dog" for long (minus Spiderman... and even Ultimate Spiderman has been killed off).

Right. Like I said in my previous post some people don't know the difference between tokenism/settling for less and a robust inclusion of minorities.

I mean If one is using three minorities to make their point time to take a harder look yknow?

1) Everyone who has posted so far knows this, but for those who may be lurking scared to post, talking about race doesn't automatically mean anyone is calling anybody racist. You can talk about the questionable to negative implications of race without labeling people as racist.

2) All practitioners of prejudice (including Racism) are not created equal. One of the biggest barriers that we as a society face (Americans in particular for this post purposes) in dealing with our present prejudices is the labeling of said acts (except Sexual Orientation, where open prejudice can still be seen as a viable political platform) as the actions of extremists. Not only does it help Institutionalized Prejudice continue, but it only serves to further the agenda of said extremists.

3) Prejudice can be subconscious. Over the past 40+ years Marvel and DC have created an environment where virtually only White Males are considered indispensable to the stories being told. Unless said character is Wonder Woman or a few other White Females (and after the past 8 years, I can safely say that this list has gone down considerably), said character will head into a period of disrepair that ends up severely damaging if not killing the character's viability outright. Why do I say this? Take a look at those past 40 years and what happens when either a series gets canceled or a major creative change happens in a team book. Who are the first characters that get voted off the Island?*

*What about Storm you might ask? Well, Storm is a unique case. Yes, she does get panel time and has gotten panel time for the past 37 years, but it's becoming more and more obvious that she has reached her ceiling. She's little more than panel filler in the majority of her monthly appearences at the moment and Marvel is gunshy about giving her an ongoing (which does make sense when you consider the market), maybe things will get better for her in the future, but if she gets divorced from T'Challa, they will most certainly get worse at some point.


On a very important sidenote, StoneGold is absolutely correct in that marginlization to non-minorities whose only crime is not being created after 1969 (random), which is a MAJOR indictment against both the genre's creative credibility and the fandom's ability to accept the unfamiliar. (which is a building block to accept substantial and lasting change) At the same time is anyone here going to say that it doesn't hurt minority characters the most? I'm not sure you honestly can.

Also he said Black Orchid is not white. Still I would love to see a roster more like the wizards we saw in the FCBD.
