Awesome! It seems this volume will collect the Donald stories published concurrent with those in first Uncle Scrooge book. I haven't read any of these longer stories (Shacktown, The Golden Helmet, The Gilded Man) so I'll really enjoy this!

Really? I think I've read Shacktown.
The Golden Helmet is a classic. Deals with the finding of a viking grave and helmet, and a deed to North America. Rosa did a sequel to it. I believe the final Barks/Rosa series from Gemstone collected the 2 stories (but I missed it and its now very hard to find).
I just saw this the other day and was thrilled. Will be ordering mine tonight when I get home.
I like the fact there's no dust jacket to mess with.
Besides being the highest quality and my own enjoyment, I'm buying these specifically to share with my future grandchildren in the not too distant future. What a great gift to them !
Well, I've only been reading Duck stories for a little over a year now. I've actually already read the Rosa sequel to Helmet (it was in a trade Boom put out before they lost the license) so seeing the original will be especially neat.

Many times over the years I've wanted to get into Donald Duck and Scrooge McDuck, but I have no idea where to begin. Knowing myself, I would want to begin at the beginning--at least with the first Carl Barks stories. Is there a series of collected editions that follows the duck stories chronologically?
Yes, BUT, these were the collections that Gladstone did years ago and are now hard to find. They collected the Barks Donald Duck and Scrooge McDuck stories in parallel series, plus other collections for stuff like the Gyro Gearloose.
Your best bet at this time is the get the FBI books coming out. The upcoming Scrooge collection I think starts with the first ones. Each volume IS chronological, just the volumes are being put out of order.
Okay, because on Amazon I always get various suggestions for Donald/Scrooge books. I gather the FBI books would be Donald Duck: "Lost in the Andes" and Uncle $crooge: "Only a Poor Old Man." So I should ignore other suggestions like Walt Disney's Comics and Stories Archives vol. 1 and Walt Disney Treasury: Donald Duck vol. 1?
Lost in the Andes and Only a Poor Old Man are what you're looking for. The WDC&S Archives is the very earliest stuff and doesn't include Barks. One of the reasons that they're releasing the volumes out of order is that Barks started out doing ten-page Donald stories. And while they have their charm, they aren't the adventure stories everyone thinks of when talking about Barks. It would be a fairly weak way to open a multi-volume collection.
Not to repeat what Slam_Bradley said, but these aren't the ducks you're looking for. The WDT: DDv1 is a collection of DON ROSA's Donald Duck stories. No Barks. The WDC&S archives collect the first few issues of WDC&S, published LONG before Barks came along.
Thanks, that clears things up for me.
Yeah, these Fantagraphics volumes are the best way to go.
