Default CBR: Who Should Assemble "The Avengers" Video Game?

Marvel has announced that a video game will arrive alongside "The Avengers" film, but who's working on it? CBR has some ideas for who we'd like to see bring Earth's Mightiest Heroes to consoles.

    It doesn't matter.
Rule of thumb, avoid the games that tie into the movies.

As for an Avengers game NOT tied down by a movie and rushed out to meet a deadline, that's a very different story...

But one I can't answer. I'm sure there are plenty of studios that can make a fun game, besides mentioning the stock answers of Bioware, Rocksteady, etc, etc.

I’m more of a handheld guy and the two Spider-Man games Griptonite made for the DS are loads better than the kind of watered-down afterthoughts you usually see in the portable versions of a game put out on multiple consoles so I’d really love to see what they could do with a 3DS Avengers.
New and improved me. Now with a CAPITAL “B”.

Terrible rule of thumb. I found both the Captain America movie game, The Hulk movie game, and the Thor movie game to be very enjoyable. The Spider-Man ones aren't half bad either. Unfortunately, alot of people will never know this because of the sweeping generalizations from the hive mind that say tie-in games are all bad.

How many movie tie-in games have you sampled, Treqqor?

Isn't Rocksteady Games owned by WB now? I would think that alone would rule them out.

One of the other suggestions in the article is PopCap games, this isn't to be taken entirely seriously. Even just as "what if" speculation though, I'm not entirely down with the idea of a Rocksteady Avengers game. Let's see what they do with Superman before we start assuming they can work wonders with any old superhero franchise.

Considering how varied the combat styles and powers are of the Avengers, I just don't see it working. It would require an amount of development that would be prohibitive considering the likely sales, at least to do it right. Seriously, fighting as IM vs Cap? Those are two COMPLETELY different combat engines.

As much of an Avengers fan as I am, I'd be VERY skeptical of any game, no matter who the dev is. A Justice League game even moreso.

Well I can't speak for Treqqor but I will say it's not as bad a rule of thumb as you're making it out to be. I enjoyed Spider-Man: The Movie and Spider-Man 2 but Spider-Man 3 was awful. I also didn't enjoy the Hulk movie game, unlike you, or Superman Returns. It extends beyond comic book movies too. Men In Black was bad, King Kong was very repetitive, as was one of the (presumably) many Lord Of The Rings tie-ins I played.

I will admit that things seem to be getting better. Not enough for me to sample any but I've heard good things about the Scott Pilgrim video game and Lord Of The Rings: Battle For Middle Earth II was great. And I say that as a non-LOTR fan. I'm just worried about the number of developers who don't think like that and will continue to see them as nothing but tie-ins.

Scott Pilgrim was the best retro style game ever made.
Well...it's tied with Megaman 9, but it's close!

It's not so much that movies games are almost always bad, as it's that movie games are almost always really average or mediocre.

I found Spider-Man 3 enjoyable enough. I'm not sure what fault could be found with the most recent Hulk Game. You jump around New York, leveling entire blocks with your fists, throwing cars over the tops of buildings and fighting the army, the U-Foes, Hulk-Buster Iron Man, Talbot, the Bi-Beats and many more. You protect Rick Jones and Betty Brant from various threats as just about any version of the Hulk you want to be, and you can battle other Hulk's in online competition. The game mechanics are solid, the story moves as fast or as slow as you want and there's pretty much no end to the challenge modes. What exactly is lacking?

If customers treat tie-in games as lesser, and dismiss them out of hand, many quality games will be overlooked. How many bad games come out everyday that aren't tie-ins? Alot. Most, I'd say. But no one makes a summary dismissal of all non tie-in games.

A surreal deconstruction of the Avengers by Hideo Kojima, but the odds of that happening are extremely slim.

Yes. Typically, even the very best movie-based games are only good compared to over movie tie-in games.
