A story that really went nowhere and average art. It felt very decompressed, like something Bendis would write, and I don't say that in a positive way.

I can see not caring for decompression, it's certainly something you have to have a taste for so I can see that being a turn off.

But still, I think there is a definite way decompression can be used well in comics, and that is if the form follows the function of the story.

In this case, the story is a blending of science fiction and mystery, and I think that when telling that particular kind of story decompression can be a useful tool in building a sense of mystery. If this were meant to be a more action driven comic and all that decompression gave us was an issue long fight scene I'd be right there with you in feeling that decompression was hurting the issue, but as things stand the technique seems to being used to heighten elements of the story so it doesn't seem to be a problem.

Tastes vary though as I said, so I can understand your aversion.

Man I wish Risso was just an average artist. The quality of art in the industry would be through the roof.

There was nothing 'decompressed' about this issue. There was a lot to take in and process. I'm not sure you know what 'decompressed' means. Are you frustrated because it didn't give you all the answers the moment the questions were brought up?

Eh, I do think it was slightly decompressed in that it focused largely on establishing the visuals of the world and character interactions rather than much in the way of plot. It's just that as I said earlier the technique is actually being used well here in that it's a style that helps to create a great sense of mood and heightens the sense of mystery.

The plot of the issue was basically he wakes up, buys some drugs then goes fishing for junk to trade for money only to encounter a sinking ship. That's a scenario that probably would have only taken a few pages in a more traditional, compressed comic, and in the process we would have lost everything that made the comic so great.

You ever read Clockwork Orange? very similar approximation of future-speak. Sure it can be challenging, but as other posters have said, context should make most of it pretty self explanatory.

i enjoyed it, but have decided that much like azzarello's other work i enjoy it more in large doses so i will wait until i have all issues and then read them all at once. i thought the concept of orphans doing an american idol type of competition to win being adopted by the bradgelina-type couple was both hilarious and quite possibly the road we're headed down.
Mr. Backlund continued wrestling under the new gimmick of an out of touch, yet highly dangerous, maniac out to teach the new generation a lesson.[3] He often appeared in business suits, had a hyperactive personality, and used (or, often, misused) large words to sound important. He also demanded that he be addressed as "Mr. Backlund". He would only sign autographs for wrestling fans if they could recite the names of all of the US Presidents in chronological order

I read this few days ago and i liked it. When you got the future speek and understood what they were saying it was interesting.

Risso art was bloody awesome worth more than 5 dollars alone.

Ape man lead hehe! The writing could be better but hard to judge in 1 issue.

When is the first trade coming out i wonder ? Looks like better to read like a prolonged story o 4-6 issues at once.
    Pull List:
    The Walking Dead,Fatale,Near Death,Storm Dogs,Happy,BPRD,XO-Manowar
    American Vampire,Animal Man,Swamp Thing

It's a 9-issue series, sounds like if it does well they'll revisit later with another mini. Sounds designed for trade waiting, I'm doing digital myself.

Great second issue, I love that bullets just bruise him.

And the line, "Get down! They be scurvy dogs!"? Best single line of dialog I've read in a while. It made me laugh harder than a comic has any right to.
