I've always figured the aliens would make at least one more appearance before the end, but probably right near the end.

I hate zombies, they are one of my biggest fears.
But I love when Mignola draws them. So wonderful

I don't think you need to actually fear zombies. probably not going to happen. ;)
It seems to be a pattern for the B.P.R.D. stories that don't feature the really iconic characters (like Liz, Johann and Abe). This one's about Fenix and Andrew Devon. Most readers, you mention Andrew and they'll give you a blank look, so I'm guessing that's why he isn't a major feature on the cover.
Likewise, the March Year of Monsters variant had only a voodoo doll to represent the B.P.R.D. since the two agents in that story were completely new (well, Agent Vaughn wasn't, but his appearance in Casualties was so brief it barely counts).
Well, maybe that's the joke to it 'though: the harsh and sacriligeous anonimity and mindlessness to *zombies*?
Where only some people would go: "Oh no! Dead gramps wouldn't ever do that!" Everybody else would go: "look out it's f###in zombies, kill them all!"
Plus for the B.P.R.D. (and with it the world) it seems to be spelling out: "It's all going to hell! Any minute now!!"
I like it.
Chillingly good stuff besides Mignola, Slint, M, Knut and really big chunks of tinfoil?Been called a 'good egg'. Been told to rock, been told to steady myself. Been told to (please) be goin' places.

your hands miles apart, as if they'd never met / you were the happiest I'd seen you yet. ~ (full) lyrics to 'Exhume' by Bedhead.
I'm really surprised that nobody's complained, you know, about the creatures on the cover not appearing in the book. They're fantastic covers, but it feels like a cop-out if the monster in the book isn't as cool as the one on the cover, OR it feels like a cop-out if the monster in the comic is cooler than the one on the cover.
I'm totally down for a calendar of all these covers, or even a one-shot collecting them, but I'm not making an effort to track them down for the singles.
Strangebeard: It's not the size of the pirate in the fight, but the size of the fight in the pirate.
Variants are an odd thing. I guess they appeal to collectors, but I can't see the point of them myself, so it's difficult for me to see how these covers are somehow more superfluous than any other variant.
I can see what you mean about it being misleading though. It is in defiance of the purpose of a cover, to be an iconic representation of the story within. These don't do that. But I do appreciate this:
The cover is obviously not a standard cover. Most variants don't do that. The miniseries title is gone, the Dark Horse logo is missing, there's a band across the bottom indicating it's part of a yearly set (this one being the January cover). They're done everything they can to say "This is a variant cover" short of stamping that phrase on it somewhere. I respect that honesty, even if the rest is confusing.
Hopefully there will be a calendar someday. That would certainly be worth owning.
posted via links by others in separate threads - so just posting here for completeness.
I gotta say, this one thrills and satisfies me to my young at heart sic-fi core - an homage to a War of Worlds tripod and Martian.
not sure why the crescent moon appears to be "in front" of a mountain range, but maybe that will get fixed.

Sounds reasonable.
Which sort of upsets me. Couldn't it be like an easter egg thing? I mean it seems pretty tiny. And easter eggs can be a thing for movie-kind-of-scifi-stuff?
And eggs can be made to look round from at least two angles, like a broken non-quartz non-LED clockface may be telling the time at least twice a day?
Maybe the cover was made around Easter? Or it would be some Easter Egg anniversary? Martian Easter time being around the corner?
I'm starting to think the alien might know more...

I don't think that's a mountain range. It's a design element Mike uses a lot to break up space. I think here it just represents where dust/smoke/clouds give way to the open sky above.
"Okay, I know I said I wasn't going to shake things up, but we're going to have to get some pants on this one."
