He really was one of my favorite artists. I fell in love with his rendition of DD, and ended up discovering his work in Tales of Suspense with IM. Finally, he took Dr. Strange to new heights after Frank Brunner's run which I thought would never be eclipsed.
I never realized his eyesight was going, which makes his last work with Ed Brubaker on Cap #600 even more remarkable.
As far as the most memorable issue for me drawn my Gene? Probably DD fighting Hyde and Cobra without his hypersenses in a deserted lighthouse... I think issue #69 or thereabouts. The fight took place completely in the dark!
I'd love to hear Ralph Macchio, Peter Sanderson, and Dean Mullaney's thoughts on Gene since they were often found contributing to the letters pages of Marvel back in the late 60's and early 70's.
