I'm fairly certain this was presented as a "freedom of conscience" issue.

As in "Those baby-killing Democrats are trying to force Catholic hospitals to kill babies."

Hospitals are already free to decline to perform abortions (which are only covered in very limited circumstances), it's just they can't do it AND receive federal funding.

so basically the Catholcis are saying that their deeply deeply felt moral objection to all abortions could be eroded if, you know, it meant less money.

Tennessee sponsor of guns-in-bars bill arrested for DUI with gun

A Tennessee lawmaker who sponsored a controversial bill to allow handguns to be carried in bars was arrested Tuesday for driving under the influence and possessing a handgun while under the influence.

Police said that Tennessee state Rep. Curry Todd (R) was pulled over at around 11:15 p.m. in Nashville, according to WSMV-TV. Officers found a loaded Smith & Wesson .38 Special hidden between the driver’s seat and center console.

An affidavit charged that the lawmaker was “almost falling down at times” and “obviously very impaired and not in any condition to be carrying a loaded handgun.”

(Yes, that's really him.)

They arrested him for having a loaded handgun in his vehicle while operating it under the influence of alcohol? Why that's unconstitutional! That might wash in the country of Europe, but not in the US of A.

Er... yeah he does. The Church is generally ok with medical operations for things like ectopic pregnancies. Basically as long as the operation is for the woman's health, and the abortion is an indirect (and unavoidable) effect, the Church is ok with it.

Think it was stated outright by whoever the Pope before John Paul II was, and AFAIK it hasn't been contradicted by Benedict.
