So Eric Cantor has pitched a bill that would provide a tax cut to "small business owners".

I know, it sounds good at first, but you have to understand what Eric Cantor defines as a "small business owner". He means a business with less than 500 employees. Which, critics have noted, would include Paris Hilton, Donald Trump, and the new ownership group of the Los Angeles Dodgers that just paid $2 billion for the team.

Meanwhile, House Republians are fighting to cut foodstamps by 11% over the summer. This in spite of the fact that statistics show in 2009, 8% of families on foodstamps actually escaped the poverty line, and are no longer on them. Meaning, even in the economy's toughest time in the past 70 years, they did what they're supposed to. Yet, they're being demonized as part of that damned "nanny state".

It's Obama's idea, of course, so the vote fell almost strictly along party lines, with only one Democrat, and one Republican voting opposite the rest of their party on the issue, placing it at 51-45 (and needing 60 votes to pass, natch).
I really think one of Obama's biggest failings has been thinking that anything productive could ever be accomplished by reaching across the isle to these fuckers.

they've used every opportunity to label him as the "most divisive president ever." what you're talking about would be him embracing that label; for better or worse.

    worstblogever has me pitch in:

Unfortunately, that's not how Cantor defines "small business", that's how small business is defined. That needs to be changed. Small business should be defined by how much they're pulling in. Three people running a shadow investment firm that funnels hundreds of millions of dollars is not a small business by any form of reality.

    Hey, it worked for Lincoln.

Wait, no it didn't, they shot him. But historically, it worked for Lincoln. Because really, Obama doesn't even come close to ranking in divisiveness when compared to Lincoln. In that Lincoln's election is what caused the south to bother seceding in the first place.

The worst part is that it's so similar. The South seceding was an over-reaction to an imaginary future scenario. Lincoln was much more into working something out to keep the Union rather than just abolish slavery in the South in a dictatorial fashion. Sometimes "the other side" is totally unreasonable.

Embracing the label or not, he isn't going to lose one liberal vote or gain a conservative one.

Oh, agreed, fully. I kind of hope that if/when he gets re-elected, he just says 'fuck it' from day one and starts ignoring the GOP.

It's the people in the middle whose votes he'll lose, and they're the ones that really matter.

Some of the votes in the middle he will lose because he looks weak for taking the treatment he is getting from the GOP and some he will lose because he looks dumb for wasting his time trying to work with people who aren't interested in working with him.

I love how Repubilcans just pick and choose the dickish aspects of their religions:

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) on Thursday dismissed criticism from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), falsely claiming the group did not represent all Catholic bishops.

Referencing Matthew 25, the USCCB called on Congress to put the poor first in budget priorities and rethink cuts to programs that benefited the least among us.

“These are not all the Catholic bishops, and we just respectfully disagree,” he said on Fox News after being questioned about the bishops criticism of his budget plan.

The USCCB later responded to Ryan’s comment, informing The Hill that they represented “all of the U.S. bishops on key issues at the national level.”

Ryan has said that his Catholic faith helped shape his budget plan. But Catholics have questioned his admiration for the libertarian novelist Ayn Rand, who advocated the “virtue of selfishness” and called Christianity the “the best kindergarten of communism possible.”

Ryan’s House-approved budget for 2013-2022 would cut the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides food stamps, by $133.5 billion over the next decade. Approximately 2 million individuals would be cut off from the program entirely, according to the Center of Budget and Policy Priorities. Another 44 million would see their benefits cut.

In a letter to House Committee on Agriculture members, Bishop Stephen Blaire, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, described the proposed cuts to the program as “unjustified and wrong.”

    (...)
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), who is also Catholic, has dismissed the bishops’ criticism as well.
