Brett White will surely be disappointed when references to Peter's death come and he might feel forced to read oldier stories or just accept the references. And that's why I believe that Miles Morales is the absolute best Spider-Man for 2011. His adventures have no precedent. There is no official canon to follow or forty year old stories to adapt. This is a new Spider-Man for the modern comic book age. I have no idea where his story is headed, but right now, Miles is the Spider-Man to beat. Sorry Pete.

Let's not discount how great Ultimate Peter Parker was just yet. Definitely my favorite Pete and the only Spidey i really cared about. Until now, of course. Great article. People should give Miles a chance. Just two issues in and he's already relatable to any comic fan. This book is Bendis starting the career of the most human superhero i have seen in a long, long time, and that's why his style is great for it. And the revelation that his powers are not the same as Pete's is just icing.
I don't care for the Ultimate line anymore, but would like to see them intro a 616 version as the new Scarlett Spider or something...
Great article! I agree with the author on pretty much all accounts. I think he's right on everything that Miles represents as a character. I just hope Bendis can keep his writing on track to keep up with the expectations.
I like Ultimate Comics. - Read them with us!
I also buy: Captain America, Avengers, FF, New Avengers, X-Factor, among others
I knew I wasn't going to hate the new direction, but I was very surprised at how much I truly loved it. The art wows me every time I read it, and I'm constantly re-reading the first two issues over and over. I can't wait until #3 and I can't wait to see the villains this Spider-Man will face.![]()
The first time I saw love, it was hanging from a tree.
As much as I don't want to like this book, and I don't want to pay 3.99 for it. It is incredibly well written and superbly drawn.
Bendis has me really hooked on how well this reboot works. Bastard.
Pull List: Dynamite Comics (15 titles), Haunted Horror, Popeye Classics, Suicide Squad
I can appreciate how the author feels about Miles (I don't feel that way), but his opinion on Ultimate Pete I really disagree with. Miles is good for 2011 but Pete was just as good.
1) Find a bad guy
2) Be Wolverine
Ultimate Wolverine is coming back, sort of!
This was a really great article. I think he really hit the nail on the head.
I loved this article. I felt it was mostly if not all the way true. I know that people have preferences but seeing this new Spidey instead of the same old Peter is so much cooler. I can see how people relate to Pet but I think more can relate to Miles and there is way more Story to be told by miles then there is by Pete.

This is what essentially killed the article in my mind. Miles is so new and novel? He has parents that love him? He has family drama? I'm sorry, but Peter Parker had that too. When I read the first issue of Ultimate Spider-Man I didn't see anything different in Miles's parents that I saw with May and Ben when Peter was first introduced. And he described Miles as if he was really all that different than Peter Parker. He wasn't. If anything, he was more boring because he didn't say much, do much, or even show much expression on pretty much anything about anything. How does that make him a better Spider-Man? Since when did Spider-Man need to be a boring statue? And that's why I believe that Miles Morales is the absolute best Spider-Man for 2011. His adventures have no precedent. There is no official canon to follow or forty year old stories to adapt. This is a new Spider-Man for the modern comic book age.
And saying there's no official canon to follow is demonstrably wrong. There has been an attempt to replace Peter Parker before. It was called the original Clone Saga and it's not well-remembered by many. The writer also glosses over the whole concept of Miles being a replacement character. He's NOT a new Spider-Man in the sense that he's taking over for another Spider-Man. If there was no Spider-Man in Ultimate before him, then that would be different and the writer might have a point. That is not the case here. Miles is a replacement character, a gimmick, and a fraud.

That last statement is what killed your comment in my mind. Replacement heroes can be some of the best kind. See: Dick Grayson's recent stint as Batman, Wally's run as the Flash, and Jack Knight as Starman (who was a replacement for a replacement for a replacement). And those are just off the top of my head.
Anyway, what I think what Brett is saying is that there's a freedom with Miles that there wasn't with the original Ultimate Spider-Man series. In that series, fans were constantly wondering when certain characters or storylines would show up. Now we're not waiting to see slightly different takes on Mysterio or Venom. We're not expecting a new iteration of death of Gwen Stacey. Beyond common Spider-Man themes (family and responsibility) Miles Morales provides a blank storytelling slate.
Finally, your invocation of the Clone Saga is off base. The problem with that storyline wasn't that they tried to replace Peter Parker. The problem was that it was poorly written and drawn (in my opinion, at least).
