Default CBR: Johns Fights For The Underdog In "Aquaman"

DC Comics CCO and writer Geoff Johns spoke with CBR about his take on "Aquaman" and the mysteries of Atlantis, explaining exactly why people should care about the aquatic Golden Age character.

Nice. Articles on CBR and Newsarama. DC is giving Aquaman a nice push. I love that Geoff and Ivan plan to be on the the book for the long haul.

Quite excited to pick it up. It's hard getting books in a day early. I don't want to read them before my customers can get them.

I hope the obscure Aquavillain that's being revamped is Pomoxis.

This is, quite honestly, the only DC revamp book I'm interested in. Aquaman has so much potential and it sounds like Johns, from what I'm interpreting through his answers, has a lot of the same ideas about this character's personality that I do. Not necessarily the same stories, but a general conception of "who" Aquaman is. I think that's what the character needs: a clear vision. I'm excited about what he has to bring to the table for Arthur, and I'm especially excited to see Ivan Reis's art!

This is also one of the few books where I'd love to see villains reintroduced for the "first" time. Clearly define their origins, because so many people (myself included) don't have a clear understanding of where Black Manta comes from or what his problems with Aquaman are. And this may have to come down the line, but I feel like I'd love to see a "definitive" version of Aquaman's origin. There are so many minor variations and I was never able to tell which was the most current. This is a great opportunity to just go "this is where Arthur Curry coms from."

Hmm another member to the Aqua Family. Honestly that Family tree is massive already assuming no one got deleted.

    The mystery is interesting.

Still If Aqualad not really showing up to the second arc then I am forced to wonder why they did not just Lobdell use him in Teen Titans. These plans are going to have to be incredibly impressive to make up for that.

I agree origins are going to need some defining. Manta has variable origins, depending on Aquaman's Origin u need modifications to Orm and assorted relatives, then u have to figure out if Garth, Tula, Dolphin, Koryak are in continuity and their origins. I think Mera is fine as long as BD is in. Lorena is also going to need a new origin. Also if Mera and Arthur are running around the sea then wtf are Jackson and Lorena doing? Chilling in Atlantis, getting trained by someone etc?

I understand why Johns is doing the "make fun of them so you can see how powerful they really are" bit, but I don't like bringing the real world jokes about Aquaman (made by those who don't know him) into the DCU. Especially since he would have been public for five years by the time his series starts.

Could the new family member actually be the return of a previous one? Maybe in the new DC Arthur, Jr was not killed by Black Manta, setting the stage for an Aquaboy/Robin meeting. Aquaboy could wear that old Aquaman costume like he wore in the animated Brave and Bold.

One more thing: Will Arion be featured in the story of how Atlantis sank?

I doubt it. Black Manta killing Aquababy is basically the fundamental reason that Aquaman in the DCU will never ever be like the Brave and the Bold Version.

Yeah, and there's something you learn about the Trench based on a very strange organism that I just find fascinating and completely disgusting and disturbing! It's all based on the science of it.
If this is the organism I think it is... *SHUDDER*

PS: Eager to pick up Johns' Aquaman, by the way. But

As someone who hasn't had a lot of exposure to Aquaman in the past I am still really looking forward to this book. Although I think Johns' GL run has stagnated somewhat (but I did enjoy the new #1), to begin with it was great and Johns seems to be really passionate about Aquaman.

I am pumped for this title and the Flash this week. Both sound promising.

The jokes will probably be made by criminals. I personally hope they're pretty funny.
