*sigh*
Nothing kills a franchise like Loeb. He effed up the Ultimate universe, and now he's going to eff up Marvel Cosmic.
Loeb is DC's greatest weapon...
*sigh*
I've got no opinion on Loeb as I've read very little by him but he can't possibly do an event any worse than Bendis or Fraction. Bendis did an amazing (especially in hindsight) build up for Secret Invasion only to deliver one of the worst and boring events in comic history. And Fear Itself is ironically named since Marvel should Fear whats its becoming if this passes for a must read event. Its time for some new blood running the events.
Firstly, I'm not sure you can kill that which isn't even alive. When you consider that he doesn't have a book at the moment and frankly doesn't have the greatest publication history to begin with, worse case scenario Loeb's book bombs, and Nova is frankly no worse off than he is at the moment.
Frankly I consider this good news even if you're a Nova fan that doesn't like Loeb. This book has about as big an A list creative team as Marvel could put together... and that shows that marvel is trying VERY hard to make this book work. It's basically the Big Shots treatment without that label.
If this creative team can't get a Nova book to sell well, then in the current market it probably can't be done.
I expect Marvel to screw it up though given their history with Nova. There is a huge market for Cosmic as evidence by Green Lantern books which have only been the dominant franchise in comics for the 3-4 years. Green Lantern got that way by getting a strong push from DC whereas Marvel utterly dropped the ball with Nova.
Nova gets this huge push in Annihilation and then his own ongoing book. Then in the followup to Annihilation Nova is MIA from the main event. Then mostly MIA in the next event and the next. Then he gets put into Secret Avengers but is immediately jobbed to Steve Rogers at which point he left the team. It wasn't until Thanos Imperative that Nova finally got a strong push again and by that time his book had floundered. If Marvel had forced DnA to keep Nova front and center in the cosmic events I can't help but wonder if Nova's book would have survived. I love DnA's stories in cosmic but I do have to admit that they shifted the primary focus characters in their events so much that its no wonder they had a hard time selling.
Let's be honest though.. Nova is not Green Lantern. Expecting Nova to thrive because there's a healthy Green Lantern market is like expecting Moon Knight to do well because Batman is so popular. It doesn't necessarily work that way.
I do agree Annihilation was a HUGE kick off for the character... but well written event that gave him spotlight. Can you argue that DnA didn't really put Nova is the spotlight? To a degree yes... though I did think their Nova book was actually pretty good.
That said, in the same way Nova isn't Green Lanter, DnA isn't Loeb. If Loeb is writing the book, odds are if nothing else, it WILL get spotlight. I'll say again, if the book can't sell well under Loeb than it probably can't sell well at all in the present market. Unless you can snag someone like a Morrison or something, you can't really get a much bigger name on the book than him.
