Community -- Season Three

"Married... With Children" had an episode called "My Dinner with Anthrax." In fact, I would say that MWC is the precursor to "Community." MWC deconstructed and made fun of family sitcoms/movies, although it made fun of other stuff too, and Community went a step farther and deconstructs all sitcoms and pop culture in general.

Community might make topical references, but it also makes references to very obscure things from long ago. This is the first TV show I've ever seen reference My Dinner With Andre. It's that stew of fresh pop culture, trivia, and off the wall connections that makes the show so great.

it's references are rarely the point, either. they're just funny if you catch them.

The problem a show like Community is going to face is not so much its relatively short number of episodes, but that there are so many current pop culture references utilized, the show will become dated very quickly. That, if anything, will keep it from having a long life in syndication.

South Park and Family Guy (especially Family Guy) are far worse off in that regard but they do well in syndication.

Looks like tonight is the debut of Community in its new timeslot; NBC will be rerunning Remedial Chaos Theory.

(All you people with your fancy technology probably don't care, but some of us are dependent on reruns until the DVDs come out!)

Well The Simpsons referenced My Dinner With Andre too. It was a video game that Martin was fond of playing.

Season Three is out on dvd today! Anyone else pick it up yet? Amazon's had it for just under $20, but I couldn't wait so I picked it up at Target this morning despite the increased price there. Looking forward to checking it out when I get home from work.
