I think the reason for the discrepancy between the outcry of the two subjects comes from the fact that Waller being turned into wank fodder is new. Not many large people in comics that are large for reasons other than that being part of their power/gimmick (eg The Blob, Butterball... that's all I can think of at the moment) or as a character to ridicule (ie, that reporter from JMS's Superman that Supes tossed in the air after to show his superiority in power and morals). So, the one fat character that isn't a joke being turned sexy is kinda surprising. The Amanda Waller thing (she's not overweight now, so the Internet can explode) is peanuts in comparison to that mistake.
While the torture-porn in comics... well, I think that comes from a quiet and reluctant acceptance from the people that would normally oppose this is that this has been the trend in comics for a while.
At least that's my take on it. I could be wrong. Or maybe I'm only partially right.
Speaking of wank fodder, wait 'til you get a load of this week's issue of -- wait, I'm still embargoed. There's prime material for that in the last few pages of one of this week's #1s, and you'll know which one I'm talking about immediately. It's like something straight out of an internet fan-fic short story....

Just a sec. You're American. You're not supposed to understand the meaning of the word "wank".
The only #1 I'm gonna read is JL Dark, so I'll be waiting to see what you think of that one.
I'm guessing it's either Catwoman or Red Hood and the Outsiders you're talking about.
No, I think most Americans understand the word. We just don't use it as much as you Brits. I think I use it more often than most Americans, but that's probably an influence from my mom's side of the family.

If you can get the original British Kitchen Nightmares it's much better than the American one. He used to take a week or so getting to know them and working on their weaknesses -and then for the repeats he'd go back and visit them a year later. With the American one it's a much more formulaic 3 days which mostly involves giving the restaurant a makeover overnight and then giving them a new menu.
Oh, that's definitely what I'm watching. It's about the only TV I've watched for the last month. The British one (which is the one labeled "Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares" is a terrific show for this Anglophile. Heck, I enjoy it for the accents and splashes of local color as much as the kitchen stuff.
I have four episodes of the new season of the American edition on the DVR now, but I keep skipping over them to watch the British edition.
Fun stuff!
