Awesome for making Popcorn though.
Awesome for making Popcorn though.
Indeed, that is the main use.
Well, I'm out for the night.
Later man.
Aye, See you man.
Adam West Batman movie was on tonight.
I had forgotten all about the silliness of Joker and Penguin wearing masks to kidnap Bruce Wayne and Kitka.
We had a BLAST.
By the way, being a Doctor Who fan, I thought I would relate a sad story:
My family are great Doctor Who fans. The one thing the boys(7 and 8 years old) wanted from the convention was a sonic screwdriver. With their meager funds they got the best they could find in the hucksters room.
The convention was packed full of Doctor Who's, you couldn't swing a stick without hitting one, from the old to the new, some with fezzes and bow ties and some with long scarfs. It was great. They pointed their sonic screwdrivers at... everyone and... everything.
Anyway...
On the long way home we stopped at Big Boy and the waitress was very nice, but when the boys said, "Hey look what we got, we've got a sonic screwdriver." She said, "A what?", them, "you know, a sonic screwdriver, from Doctor Who.", She said, "I'm afraid I don't know Doctor Who, is that a scifi TV show?", The seven year old looks unbelievingly holding the screwdriver out, "Yeah.. you know...he's a TIMELORD...he travels through time."
We had to explain to them that not everyone watches Doctor Who.
It kinda brings home that you aren't at the convention anymore and in the world of the mundanes.
Man, I was re-organizing my comics today so I could create a Short box to take with me to Halifax (The rest will be left at my Parents house) and I seem to have lost my Jimmy Olsen One-Shot by Nick Spencer. Crap, I wanted to take that with me.
I grew up in Phoenix, AZ, so I know what that is like.
But now, it is completely different where I live. That is the great part about living in Portland, Oregon. It is a comic book nerd paradise, so whenever I get back from San Diego there are dozens of people on the flight back, and nearly everyone I meet knows genre/sci-fi/fantasy stuff. I was recently summoned for jury selection and several of the other potential jurors mentioned Dr. Who when the defendant's council asked us our favorite tv show or movie, one girl mentioned Dungeon's and Dragons when the judge asked our hobbies. It was cool to see my community embrace being nerdy so much.
Plus, there are so many comic creators in Portland and the surrounding area. You're likely to bump into Brian Bendis, Greg Rucka or Jeff Parker around town, see Matt Wagner, or Gail Simone or Mike Allred someplace nearby.
Makes one feel like being a comic-loving nerd is normal.
Tell me more of this magical place you call Port-Land.
Have you ever heard of the IFC show called Portlandia, created by and starring SNL's Fred Armisen?
It is a sketch comedy show set and filmed in Portland, and it is, like most good sketch comedy shows (IMHO), both brilliant at times and annoying very occasionally, but it represents what is so weird and great about Portland pretty well.
This youtube link is a music video that they began the show with when the first episode aired, it sums up what makes Portland so special effectively.
I haven't been to Portland since 2005.
The last time I was there, it was for the final stop on U2's Vertigo Tour -- before they headed to Europe.
I stayed in the airport overnight cos I couldn't afford a hotel, then I met up with a few friends who had pitched in for a hotel room, and stayed with them till my early morning flight.
Good times.
Anyways ...
Today's been a mixed day. Aside from the dumb argument I got into earlier (inevitable when you still live with family ...)
I found someone's ATM card while trying to use an on-campus ATM machine. It was an ATM slash credit card and the owner of it had $2,507.34 in their account (I know cos they left their receipt behind also). I returned it to a nearby student store, and the staff there promised to give it to campus security.
So I take pride in doing a good thing.
I also have a job interview later today; and I REALLY hope nothing gets in the way, and this goes according to plan.

It really is lovely here, in every sense of the word. Everything is green and lush, it is called the City of Roses because there are these beautiful rose gardens all over the area. There are some beautiful wooded areas surrounding town, Mt. Hood and the waterfalls nearby, and although many days there is some rain, it is overall much more clear and sunny than our neighbor to the north Seattle, so I find the weather and overall vibe as a result a bit more agreeable.
With the river running through town the landscape is kind of a cool feature in and of itself. There are several cool bridges crossing the river and many ways to get around town without driving, with the street cars, the train system and the buses people from the surrounding areas commute to Portland and it is just easy to get from one side of town to the other. I walk everywhere and don't drive, so Phoenix and the metro area were horrible, with a crappy bus system and a very minimal light rail having just recently been developed, and being extremely spread out, the Phoenix area is very difficult to live in without owning and driving your own car. In Portland it isn't an issue.
The culture is one of inclusion and acceptance overall, and it has been a blast to live here the last several years and help my brother and sister-in-law by being their full time live-in nanny, and to share with my niece and nephew a community I am proud to be a part of. I picked up my nephew this morning from his first day of part-time preschool, and the whole day was a reminder of how much I love living here.
I recommend visiting here to anyone who had an inkling to do so, it is a really fantastic place.
