    Default Classic comics Users

Hey guys, I've been looking at all your posts and I can honestly say that there isn't anywhere else on the internet where we can find comic READERS as you.

Is it safe to assume that 95% of you only buy comics for their readability right?
I've been roaming around other forums and although I find a lot of nice people I always see the monetary aspect of comics linked with their purchases.

    Am I wrong?
Do you collect mainly for those funny stories or do you think of long-term profit?
That's like saying if all the porn was made by my grandma I would be able to sustain a real relationship.

I really just like to find obscure or rare gems as well as classic comics that are reasonably priced. I probably collect more than I read, but they do get read eventually. And I don't think much of long-term profit as I'll probably still have my collection when it's my time to fly, but it's always a nice notion to have when I find a book that is worth much more than I am buying it for.

The majority of us acquire them purely for reading pleasure, I'd say. Probably not 95 percent, but maybe ... I dunno ... 75 percent.
I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."
Basically, if you miss the wonder of a dog flying around in a little Superman cape, you're in the wrong hobby.

I'm a bit of both. Unlike some of the OLDER collectors around here, I wasn't around to buy certain books off the stands and the only way to get them is to buy them in the back-issue market. Like early Spidey, Daredevil and X-Men. That sometimes requires a wad of cash, especially if you like the books in higher grade. So yeah, when I get a good deal I mention it. And yeah, to some, that is a big crime around here.

I consider every comic purchase a monetary loss. Comics aren't very liquid at all. I do occasionally sell comics, mostly to make room and because it's not as bad a hit as throwing them in the garbage, which is a thought I don't like even if money were not an issue. Only maybe twice this year did I make significant profit in a comics sale, and by significant I mean more than $5. Definitely not worth the effort put in or all the comics I sold at a loss. I buy them because I want to read them, even though I buy them quicker than I can read them.

I forgot to mention that I also SELL books. On a good day I can make up to $3000. So when I see an opportunity to be exploited, I take it, resell, subsidise my own personal purchases. How else would I pay for those high-grade SA books??

I collect them for my own reading and displaying pleasure.
BUT... whenever I receive "visitors" and they're all looking at my colection and they ask me which is worth the most... I do take a sort of sadistic pleasure telling then, "well, so and so issue just sold on ebay for over $500, and that one is going for about $750, etc."
Not that I want to sell my collection, and I've never paid over $100 for a single issue, but it's always nice to brag :-)
I do, however, realize that if I were ever to sell off my entire collection (which I would never in my un-right mind do) that I would actually take a loss from what I have originally paid for it.

I'm definitely both a collector and a reader, but I'm primarily a reader.

I definitely savor shelling out a few hundred dollars to own my very own copy of Avengers #4 or Showcase #22, but I'm happy with a mid-grade copy and absolutely MUST open the book and read it, feeling the ink of history under my fingers (otherwise, what was the point of buying it?).

Really, I collect to own, not to resell at some later point, and condition isn't all that big a deal to me. But yes, I am a collector in addition to being a reader.

I sell 95% of the new stuff i get for lots less than cover price.

And my buying of older stuff has dropped off considerably in the last few years (damn internet!)
My Multiverse had a Crisis, and all i got was a lousy Reboot!

It's not my main job, just something I do for fun on the side. I try not to touch my other incomes where comics are concerned.

i collect/buy comics mainly for the enjoyment/reading. i know some people are driven by the $$$ but thats not my thing. its like one guy i used to know. he said alot of things about how much money he earns from selling and how many comics he has in his collection but as i discovered they werent true. i also give away alot of comics because to me thats what comics are about sharing the enjoyment. and people say well why not sell them? you could earn money from it. and i counter, well why not just give them away? i am not motivated by a need to be adored or worshipped for my collection. comics are fun. and they are entertaining. so i have fun with my collection and if i can make somebody happy by giving them a comic book that's great too.

I'm 99% a reader rather than a prospector. Having said that I have had a bit of success this year as an ebay seller having found some rarities not to my taste for cheap.

I do read most of the comics I buy but I am primarily a collector. I enjoy having them and the bigger, more unweildly and difficult to manage my collection gets the more I enjoy it.
I do try to get the best grades but I'm not in it for the value I'm in it for the fun.
I plan on leaving my collection to the first grandkid (none of my kids ever showed any interest in comics) that shows an interest.
