Mr. Backlund continued wrestling under the new gimmick of an out of touch, yet highly dangerous, maniac out to teach the new generation a lesson.[3] He often appeared in business suits, had a hyperactive personality, and used (or, often, misused) large words to sound important. He also demanded that he be addressed as "Mr. Backlund". He would only sign autographs for wrestling fans if they could recite the names of all of the US Presidents in chronological order

When i was watching those documentaries i saw them in one of the Wargames things and it said 1987, and im pretty sure it was before WWF because in 87 i was 4 and don't think i would remeber them if they were in WWF before that.
Unless they were there, went too WCW, then came back too WWF.

it gets kind of confusing because jim crockett promotions didn't become WCW until 89 and the road warriors went to WWF in 90, so it's close but i think you're right.
as a kid i 1st saw them in WWF too and they looked awesome so i liked them. but looking back on matches now imo demolition were better.
