This is a real shame. I would have love to read his SUpergirl. Brian Wood has always been one of the writers that has consistently delivered great and groundbreaking works both in writing and in art. Not only that, he has proven that he can write women well without making it feminist preachy.

Pella Suzuki, Megan from Local, the New York Five, the new DV8, Zee, and so many more - all of these characters have diversified the comics we read today. He has always proven that women are not only supporting characters that need to be constantly behind their men, but characters in their own right who have a unique voice and point of view. Some of them vulnerable, some of them strong, no matter what they are they all manage to matter and shape their stories.

I really hope that he gets to write more stories. His perspective in comics has always brought the medium to a whole new level, something that the over-saturated fluff market needs right now.

I agree with Chase. This is DC's loss. For whatever reason, the powers that be over there cannot grasp the importance of retaining up and coming writers. I'm sure Mr. Wood will have no problem getting work at other publishers and if Marvel was smart, they'd have an exclusive written up for him TODAY that still allows him to do creator-owned stuff ala Hickman. I bet Image or Dark Horse would be thrilled to work with him on a continuation (in theme, at least) of Northlanders.

Loved DMZ, first I've heard that Northlanders is getting the axe as well.

That's a shame, two of the best Vertigo books ending so close to one another.
Comics still reading: Saga, Sixth Gun, Walking Dead, All New X-Men, Daredevil, Fury MAX. DC New 52 isn't the worth the paper its printed on...

real loss for DC. he should have been on a top tier book on the relaunch.

i always wondered why they never gave him any DCU titles...

i won't be surprised at all if Marvel picks him up down the line. DC is really good at letting talent go to Marvel.

As will I. DMZ and Northlanders are two of my favorite Vertigo books and I was very impressed with his resurrection of DV8 for Wildstorm. I'll be sure to check out The Massive.

DC sucks at holding on to writers. They've lost Brubaker, Rucka, Waid, and Aaron to Marvel, and that's just off the top of my head. And now Wood as well. Something needs to change over there, in a big way.

I really enjoyed his work on Demo, Local, and DMZ. I've just started to get into Northlanders recently and it's pretty awesome. Reading his quick description of The Massive in this interview as a seamless transition for DMZ readers makes me all the more excited for it.

I'm a DCU reader but have never picked up a Supergirl comic before. I'm sure she's a great character but I read enough DCU comics as it is. Yet, if Brian Wood's name had been attached to the Supergirl #1 coming this September it would have been a must buy for me.

Agreed. It sounds like he really doesn't want to be an exclusive-contract writer, but if Marvel were to make a deal with him like they have with Hickman, or allow him to write his own title on the ICON imprint, then maybe. I could also see IDW picking him up.

Agreed with the sentiment that Marvel would be wise to pick him up ASAP.

He had an argument regarding NYX with Joe Q. though. So, I'm not sure with Marvel.

Brian Wood has no books at DC and J.T. Krul has 2...........................wow.

Is The Massive a standalone comic series? From his description in the interview, it sounds like it's an ongoing thing, but the image/ad in the article says that it's a 3-part serialized story in DHP. Is that it, or is it starting there and spinning off into the series?

another sign of the poor decision making at DC. Wood isn't 90's Image, so he really doesn't fit their overall tone.

DC have kinda just lost what good comics are about; chasing an awful era where sales were huge because of the speculative market that built up around the industry.

Leifeld has a book, but Irving and Jock don't? crazy.

That said, I can't wait to read The Massive!
