I’m processing the part about letting go of one’s influences to get to the core of a better story. And I look forward to finally getting to read this bad boy (at the same time I’m hoping I won’t have to struggle to purge Shadowlaw (or is that SHADOWLAW?) in order to get back into my own sci-fi/horror work)!
Thanks!
Its just a matter of figuring out what works for your OWN story instead of latching on to what worked for someone else. That's a tough one to figure out but it will come to you when you go back for re-writes.
In the years between the original concept and the development of Shadowlaw as a comic I was exposed to better movies, comics, tv, and books and that gave me a much better perspective on my own work.
Hope that helps!
Also, check out my podcast WRITING FOR ROOKIES (for new and aspiring comic book writers) for some tips on that.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention, if anyone is in the Los Angeles area, I am hosting a panel tomorrow (Saturday, August 20th, 2011) at the LA Black Book Expo about Graphic Novels and Science-Fiction and Hollywood.
You don't have to be Black or anything to attend, its just an excellent opportunity to get information straight from reliable sources about breaking into the business and how to get your projects started from scratch.
I will be up there with Geoffrey Thorne (In the Heat of the Night, Ben 10, Leverage, Star Trek: Titan - Sword of Damocles) and Anthony Montgomery (Star Trek: Enterprise "Ensign Mayweather", VH1's Single Ladies, Miles Away graphic novel) and we reveal a lot of ways to get your career going.
Sorry for the short notice, but if you're interested, feel free to come through.
Did I mention its free?
