Some of the previous Doctors have been like that though. The First behaved like everyone's grandfather, whereas Seven and Four were more trickster gods than the benevolent versions we have had since the RTD revamp.

As for Pertwee, he really just wanted a nice glass of port.

The romance element of WHO I think started in the TV movie, with him kissing Grace a few times. RTD decided to keep that.

Although there was THE AZTECS (Way back in the first season of classic WHO) where the Doctor was (accidentally) married and clearly had some feelings for an Aztec woman.

More so than the half arsed scripts or the endings which made no sense? Rose was a great character who allowed the audiences into the programme before they lost the plot in the second series and hacked out some terrible ideas, along with some really great ones.

Nope. Neither has anyone picked up that the Doctor doesn't escape from the Pandorica in the first place. Now the former you can write off as Moffat laying the seeds of something (though it doesn't explain why the Doctor doesn't want to know who exactly did this because the script tells him it's not important) but the latter I only noticed after watching the DVD last week but it's all hidden in 'timey wimey' stuff that you don't notice that an RTD scale fast one has been pulled.

Afsit said The Doctor's reply should have been "I think your an ant" or something to that extent. I thought that was pretty funny.
It also misses the point of what happened in two series and what Rose was to the Doctor.

A nice glass of port after he'd shagged the arse off Jo Grant.

To some degree I find them all a combo: benevolent trickster gods. The 4th Doctor was clearly close (platonically) with Sarah Jane and other humans, and went off several times about how much he liked humans in general.

Except that is the thing...The Doctor and River onscreen share no romantic chemistry whatsoever. Its likely due to the age difference honestly. Since the actress who plays River is 49 years old (twice Smith's age) and its hard to get feelings for that to work. Its why Clara seems to click really well. She is very smart and is a spark plug in a sense and matches the Doctor a lot.

I think it was their way of giving The Doctor another sonic device to communicate with Amy & Rory while they were in The Teselecta, other than that it really served no purpose. I guess he was dressing up for his 1st date with River? "Never knowingly be serious" as The Doctor said.

It's my favorite sci fi series. I recommend it to everyone.

The character never overstayed her welcome (until series 4 when RTD brought her back so the fanboys got what they wanted) but was written badly in much of series two thanks to writers who missed the point that she'd been the Doctor's way back into humanity, and in doing so he fell in love with her but it had to end in tragedy to make the Rose character worth something, and for the Doctor to move on. Sadly some fans and RTD wouldn't let us so Rose was constantly (and still is) rubbed in our faces, when she should have had that brilliant tragic climax rather going off with a human Doctor to fuck because RTD thought it'd be a great idea dramatically when it wasn't.

The programme doesn't need a character like Rose to lure in a mainstream audience anymore, but it is overdosing on chirpy 'sassy' female characters who all seem to be broken out of the same mold because Moffat seriously struggles with female characters (Girl in the Fireplace seems now to be a glaring exception) so there's not been a female character who isn't a plot device under Moffat in his two and a half series so far. We'll see about Clara but so far she's a plot device rather than an actual character, and it's only a good performance hiding that at the moment.

I had (close to) no problems with Rose when she was an active part of the show. It's just that after she left, it seemed like the writers had a harder time getting over her than the Doctor, it seemed. Heck, one of the components to Martha's character arc was about direct comparisons to Rose, even up to Martha's departure.

I will admit that it was a nice surprise when Rose popped up at the beginning of Series 4, as I purposely stayed away from spoilers. But now in hindsight, where we had 2 seasons of Rose and then another season of talking about Rose, it almost wasn't that big of a deal to have her come back. And even after that, the faux-Doctor's companion was named Rosita, which slightly amused the real Doctor (geeze).

So I don't have a problem with Rose per se, I suppose I have more problems with the consequences of her character than anything else.

I think most of the Rose hate comes from Reunion and how she treated Sara Jane. One of if not the most loved companions of all of doctor who.

I can't help but wonder what Ace would of done in Sara's place.( I fairly sure it involves a bat and 4 tons of C4.)
