Defenders Appreciation

I am enjoying the first issues so far but have to say i wish there was a different member instead of the silver surfer, i absolutely love Doctor Strange, Namor, Red She-Hulk (prefer just She-Hulk though) and im even a Black Cat fan but ive never really liked Silver Surfer.

I was hoping he could change my mind when i started reading but i just think he seems a bit out of place.

There's a scene in #5 where Namor observes "the one wants to learn and the other needs to learn" to survive, in regards to Silver Surfer and Betty/Red She-Hulk. Once I read thatmoment, I thought that Surfer - while different - was a character that did belong because of his difference. The slight characterisations in this are definitely conflicting, but at the same time, they really can be similar in their contrast. If that makes sense...

I mean, WTF man!? This is his issue... and the artist was like a camera, adding extra pounds. =(

I've only read Fraction's Defenders, but the more I read it (and think about it) the more I realise how much I love the quote:

"The older I get, the more life seems to be the stupid, frustrating stuff that gets in the way you and reading comics."

Because it is just so true.

NEW MUTANTS #44, due out June 20, will kick off the three-part “Fear the Future,” guest starring Doctor Strange and the Defenders.

“Something’s up, and the Defenders intend to defend against it, like they do,” previews Abnett. “The New Mutants are right at the heart of it all. There are some pretty big surprises and reveals coming along.

Not much to go on from there...Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Hrm, I haven't read NM in a while. I'll check out previews here when they come, though. I wonder if it is at all related to the Concordance Engine, since (so far) there's very little else the Defenders have been doing.

I am disappointed we don't see Namor (an actual X-Man) in these previews, but I'm certainly not surprised. Shakes fist at X-office!

This is all he has to say on the Defenders, but it was great to read tidbits from an artist that was responsible for so many comics I've read, including his run on Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner. Apparently he's a Hulk fan.

CBR:You also drew the Hulk in "The Defenders" for a few years. Like "The Incredible Hulk," that was a book that was a little different.

Sal Buscema: They were supposed to be a very loosely-knit group of reluctant characters who really didn't want to be there, but circumstances brought them together every month. It was unique in that fashion, I suppose. Not like the Avengers, who were official members of this group. The Defenders really wanted to be elsewhere, but circumstances always brought them together.

So I was rereading Defenders last night, and I noticed Dr Strange drawing the Concordance Machine after he says one of his friends killed himself. It stood out to me, and I wonder what it means.

So I was rereading Defenders last night, and I noticed Dr Strange drawing the Concordance Machine after he says one of his friends killed himself. It stood out to me, and I wonder what it means.

It comes from a little Defenders preview story. Strange went into the head of a local character named Notebook Joe and saw the Engine's design, though he didn't know what it meant at the time. (Needless to say, Notebook Joe had never been seen in a Doctor Strange story before or since...)
