Thanks! I know I'm missing a bunch, especially if we count the Defenders for a Day, so I'll be adding them as folks point them out or rediscover them.

Speaking of ... I wanted to be sure and include this bit of awesome here on this thread.

Luke cage and the rest were featured in more issues than this new Fantastic Four team( of Wolverine, Hulk, Ghst Rider, etc--and I would call them Fantastic FOur members for a day--that would be cheeky).

I just like the Defenders. Namor, Hulk and Doctor Strange have their own appreciation threads. And the Defenders were about being as different from the Avengers as possible with strange parings and not just Avenger-like--A-list hero lovefests with Namor, Hulk, Surfer, and Strange.

    Me too.

I do have a question. How come underwater people are lily white and have no gills. And wear green and yellow swimming trunks?? With no sunlight..how did that happen??

    *Ahem.*

Sorry bout that..I was channeling my inner Tiger-Shark. My fav underwater character after Sting Ray.

i don't know about aquaman, but namor does have gills (so do the rest of the atlanteans). they are located behind his ears.

as far as skin color, well namor is an exception to his people. the rest of them are blue. and how tan do you think you would be if you were submerged underwater your whole life?

tiger shark is awesome. i want him to keep his two-headed persona after the deep ends.

Reading the original Everett Namor stories, the coloring was a little inconsistent, but originally it seemed the bluish skin was NOT their actual skin color but just how they appeared underwater. On the surface, their skin color tended to be caucasian. But, as Namor spent a lot of his time on the surface and his kin in Atlantis, that got lost along the way and Namor became permanently pink and the others permanently blue.

As far as the green and yellow, there were many underwater heroes of the 1940s, and Namor wore different trunks originally (and is back to wearing his 1970s black costume now more often) while Aquaman has worn other costumes. But, the other heroes and costumes' color schemes have proven a little less than iconic it seems.

Other than the scope of the challenges, never saw much difference between Bendis New Avengers and the Defenders. As for the classic Avengers, it was a much more structured and formal organization than the Defenders, and the Defenders usually dealt more (but far from exclusively) with supernatural and hidden threats, while the Avengers tackled super-crime and open invasions, world-conquerors.

As I recall (could be wrong), Aquaman also has them, pretty much on the same place.

I actually enjoyed most of the Secret Defenders run. Not so much the cash cow issues, but the ones with Sepluchre, Spider-Woman and a few other non A or B list heroes. I came to the original run much later, but fell in love with the different approach to the team book. I've followed through all it's incarnations (can we call New Avengers a Defender book??) through the years and very glad to see it make a comeback.

I think the idea behind the non-team aspect of the Defenders was that anyone who teamed up with them was one. Anyway, Cloud was with them for quite a while so she should be a "full-time" member if there is such a thing.

Also, the original poster forgot Peter B. Gillis as a writer.

I will happily add anyone that folks suggest, with any annotations that might be needed. My Defenders collection is spotty once past issue #100.

I definitely remember Andromeda being on the team (I wonder why? ). And I recently read up on Cloud, so ditto.

I'm sure I left out quite a bit from the intro posts. Thank you for the additions! Did Gillis write the later New Defenders?

Yes, the non-team aspect allowed for quite a fluid roster over the years. I'm going to dig out Defender for Day this weekend.

I really liked Sepluchre in Warren Ellis' Thunderbolts run. I'll have to peruse the covers a bit more, I guess, as I think the lesser used characters that showed up in the Defenders was another hallmark of the book.

I haven't read enough of the New Avengers to comment on that. But what little I have read seemed to be missing some of the quirkiness.

Thanks for that. Unlike the Avengers the Defenders are not a team I am particularly familiar with so I was just trying delineate the differences between them and the other teams in the Marvelverse.
