Default CBR: CCI: Aaron Gives the "Incredible Hulk" Separation Anxiety

This October, Jason Aaron and Marc Silvestri kick off a new volume of "Incredible Hulk" with a story that finds Bruce Banner and the Hulk separated at last. We spoke with Aaron about keeping the beast in check.

    Default Two for one

Over the years, it's been very easy to give the scientist all the depth, and leave the monster as a very two-dimensional character visualized as wrath and destruction. I like the idea of developing the monster and how he feels about the identity they both share, I just hope this development doesn't come at the cost of creating a 2D "mad scientist" arch-type. I would love to see a writer turn in a creation that spins a twin tale that encompasses the story of two completely realized people, and the life with all its conflicts that they share equally. That would be a truly epic story and one worth of The Hulk.

So this is like what, the 5th time this has happened? Hasn't it been established multiple times Hulk and Banner can't exist seperately also?

I guess they'll got back to the well until it's dry with this idea.

This looks really good. But if it's $3.99/mo, I'm waiting for the trade.

Byrne did it also. Roy Thomas before him. Peter David had them seperate and then merge into one single unified personality. So... yeah... wash, rinse, repeat every 10 years.

Didn't they already do this with Carnage in like the 80's or 90's? And haven't they done this to the Hulk already anyway?

Despite all the negativity, I'm pretty interested in this. I'll pick it up with the same 1, 3, 6, 12 rule I pick up all comics.

I've never really read Hulk that much but even I know that this is one of the more unoriginal ideas for a story about Hulk...

"This is really meant to be a jumping-on point for people who haven't been picking up 'Hulk' the last few years. They can pick this up and dive right in. It's also meant to focus on that classic dynamic with a bit of twist to it"

So we're at it again? Trying to reach out to that potential new reader? Oh god Marvel just forget it already! The stories about this supposed "new reader" are just that... stories! Marvel is trying to reach this new reader with basically pretty much any book that they're putting out and yet the numbers are going down... unbelieveable!

Not with Banner going insane as a result

I should probably explain. I have a rule where if I like issue 1, I'll buy up to issue 3. If I like the first 3, I'll buy up to 6 etc. It lets me commit to a book without accidentally dropping due to a sophomore slump.

In Aaron's defense, he said readers who haven't picked up the Hulk in the last "few" years not never or in the last 20. So, obviously, his comments were aimed at current Marvel readers who just haven't been buying Hulk.

You know, as a fan of the concept, I always thought that the Hulk IS Banner, and vice-versa. The only difference between the character and other gamma-spawned beings is that Banner is suffering from self-loathing. He hates how weak his was for not protecting his mother from his father, hates himself for thinking that he might be like his father, and hates himself for creating the Gamma Bomb. After becoming the Hulk, his self-denial further fueled his inner monster to epic proportions, resulting in fracturing of his mind and the creation of multiple personas. The tragedy is that Banner won't take responsibility of his inner id, which has resulted in inner id being anti-Banner, hence the split. Ideally, I see the Hulk as Banner liberated, where he can be the tough guy, a rogue who feels that society has put a straight-jacket on his ability to be who he is, and a fighter, less nerd more jock, and become the strongest one there is. The difference is that he sees his power as a way to protect others who would use their power and intellect to bully others, by rick-rolling his opponents.

    JMO, of course.
