Some info about the background to bring the X-Men in space back.

Nrama: Let's look at a few titles specifically. Havok, Polaris and Rachel Grey all look to be returning soon in X-Men: Legacy. Fans have been asking about their status for a while — what goes into the planning of something like that? Is it there an element of "OK, it's probably time to put these players back on the board" or is it just waiting for a writer (in this case Mike Carey) to have a story that works organically?

Ketchum: Really, it’s different in each case, for each different character we’re looking to revive. It can be a matter of timing, or waiting for a writer to bring a cool idea to the table, or just a particular fondness for a character and a desire to see them running around the books again (Mockingbird! Doug Ramsey! The Walrus?).

But in the case of Havok, Polaris and Rachel Grey, it started with Rachel. In the early planning stages of the X-Men event "Age of X," Mike Carey proposed bringing in Jean Grey as a core member of the cast. But in discussing the idea further, we realized that this could be an awesome way to bring our wayward Starjammers back into the mix.

So, rather than Jean, our Phoenix character became Rachel. It was the more interesting story: we had a mystery that lasted not just for the duration of "Age of X," but also for the issues that followed. And not only that, but this route yields so much more story: Mike Carey has an excuse to write an adventure set in outer space, and the return of these characters provides fuel for stories in the other X-Books in the coming year.

I think what I like most about that response is Ketchum mentioning that bringing Polaris, Rachel and Havok back to Earth will provide more opportunities on the X-books. It's been painfully obvious during their time away from space that Polaris at the very least, if not every single one of them, could have provided so many more great story moments to ongoing X-men events if only they were around.

Rachel is a lesser degree but still very nice to see that they noticed a much better way of doing things than in the past. They're utilizing characters that don't get nearly as much use as they deserve, and even though it's Rachel in this case rather than Lorna, that's still a huge plus in my book. Much better than the endless Wolverine kind of stuff.

and a new one, Wolverine and the X-Men, is coming in October.

Think there's any chance of this being a comic book version of the show that got canned after only one season, and as such we might get more of that universe's Polaris? I haven't done any research and digging around to find out more information, but the name automatically makes me expect it's about the cartoon rather than only coincidentally named the same as the cartoon.

While I'm ecstatic that they decided to bring back Polaris and the rest, I wonder why they're avoiding Jean like the plague...

We can only speculate, but I would guess they're not avoiding Jean "like the plague" in a sense of her being a bad thing, but rather because of the stigma of comic books as always reverting characters and dynamics back to the way they used to be. It's always been a bit of a joke to people that aren't big comic book fans that "nobody stays dead for long in comic books." Bringing Jean back from the dead would be further proof.

Personally, I want Jean back, and I want her to have more of an awesome friendship with Lorna. Or heck, at the very least some "flashback" issues set before Claremont's writing affected the X-books where we get to see Lorna and Jean spending their young adult time together.

I want Jean back to forge a stronger relationship with Lorna as well. But the whole it's cliche that comic book characters don't stay dead thing can be remedied by not killing Jean so much. I had a conversation with a friend and he said Jean's only power was to die I replied with Jean's power is to come back under her own volition.

It would have been a pretty crappy way to bring Jean back to be fair. I mean it was a great come back for Rachel but having Jean show up because of a reality warp, after all this time would be a major let down.

News about X-Men Destiny its almost certain to have Havok as an NPC.

In "X-Men: Destiny," players can take control of several new mutant characters as they face the trials and tribulations of dealing with their new powers and abilities. I think Jean will be back in time for the X-Men's 50th anniversary. I have the feeling that year will be pretty good for Silver Age x-characters.
