Default CBR: Bagley Brings "Death" to Life in "Ultimate Spider-Man"

In "Ultimate Spider-Man" #160 artist Mark Bagley depicted the "Death of Spider-Man." In July's "Ultimate Fallout" he'll show what happens after the Ultimate U's loss.

"That was fine. The first nine pages are fairly personal one-on-one scenes, but then they go to St. Patrick's Cathedral and there was like a thousand people there. So drawing the building and fitting a thousand people in there for those last few pages was rough," Bagley continued. "Then I did the last bit of issue #6 and there's some good stuff in there. I'll just say that sad Nick Fury makes me sad."

Just like "Death of Spider-Man" Bendis and Bagley's two issues of "Ultimate Fallout" are filled with somber and poignant moments. "'Ultimate Fallout' has some moments that will kick your ass emotionally in the exact same way #160 did. To me, that's great. How many times can you draw somebody punching somebody?" Bagley remarked. "After awhile you're just going through the mechanics and trying to come up with a new way of doing it, and when you get to be a grown up that's not nearly as interesting as the emotions behind what all is going on in the book. The chance to draw these sorts of emotional scenes is what I missed while I was doing 'JLA.' There wasn't a heck of a lot of it because it isn't that kind of book. So 'Death of Spider-Man' and 'Ultimate Fallout' have been really nice welcome backs."
Aww sad Nick Fury is indeed sad. :(

EDIT: Why isn't this in the Ultimate Marvel section? Thats where the Ultimate discussion goes. :p

    Bagley - brilliant as usual.

Just realized that while Spidey of 616 mourns Johnny Storm's death and joins an unexpected team as a result (FF), Ultimate Johnny mourns Spider-Man and appears to be joining an unexpected team afterward (X-Men, with Kitty and Iceman, also friends of Spider-Man).

Bagley's art was the only saving grace of the whole DoSM arc. He's one of the all-time best comic book artists.

The only silver-lining to Peter dying, other than it being a well-written story, was the art by Bagely. It was absolutely wonderful to have him back, a neat, close the circle kind of moment, and it's great that we'll get some more of him drawing these characters. I hope he's one of the rotating artists on the new book at some point.

"That last big shot of Peter's face looking up at Aunt May may be my favorite face that I've ever drawn. That came out as good I could have hoped to have done it. There's this peaceful, innocent look on his face and when I was drawing it I looked at it and went, 'That's going to kill.' And I think it did.
    1000% agree!

Yeah, I realized that too. Sort of like a cosmic balance.
Johnny Storm was dead; who is this resurrected Johnny Storm?

... I realize that most villains will be saved for new-Spidey to fight, but I want at least one of them to meet a brutal fate in the aftermath of this.. (I suspect that Osborn will return, grrr).. Hopefully the Punisher can get involved..

Just had to chime in an lay down the highest praise for what Bags and the art team were able to accomplish. Bendis wrote a brutal brawl with a human face and these guys nailed every bit of action along with subtle acting of the characters Great comics!

I like Mark Bagley. He was one of the many reasons Ultimate Spider-Man was so incredible from the beginning. His style practically defined the Ultimate books for most of their history. For that reason, I think he deserves better than what Death of Spider-Man and Ultimate as a whole have brought him. I think Ultimate has really become a joke and through no fault of Bagley's. When he left, Ultimate fell apart with Ultimatum. And when he comes back, it's only to kill the character that his art defined. I just think that's a lousy way to end a second run. It seems as though all Ultimate is good for is killing characters and making a more gloomy, depressing world. Ultimate Spider-Man used to be one of the few books with some upbeat themes after Ultimatum. Now Peter Parker is dead and pretty much every series from here on out may require a Prozac perscription. I can't remember when even 616 was this depressing.

I just read the first 2 story arcs of the new ultimate spidey and knowing whats coming makes me want to stop. Ultimate spiderman is what got me (a die hard 616 fan of twenty plus years) to finally check out the UU and enjoy it. I get they can't kill spiderman in the main universe ever really at least not permanently, so they exploit the UU once again to show us a world without yet another iconic character and how it could be passed down as a legacy of sorts. They have done that enough. Some things you shouldn't muck with. Jeph Loeb already did too much damage. I expected more from Bendis. That was his baby and he did really well up to this. I'm going back and reading all of the story arcs I missed in the pre-ultimatum UU and then I might be done. The newer stuff other than spiderman is just a violence and shock value jumbled mess.

You shouldn't judge it before you've read it. It could pleasantly surprise you and the Fallout of the Dead of Spider-Man seems to have potential for some interesting stories.
