I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."
Basically, if you miss the wonder of a dog flying around in a little Superman cape, you're in the wrong hobby.

Shopko offers a senior discount (15% off) on the first Wednesday of the month, though I'm not sure if it works online (kind of hard to show i.d.).

But I realize this doesn't help a youngster like you.

I hope yall forgive me a vent. I've been stewing on this since yesterday ... our "independence day". I watched a movie call Solider Blue. It is an account of the Sand Creek massacre in the Colorado territory in 1864. It was defiantly a massacre.

I saw the bodies of those lying there cut all to pieces, worse mutilated than any I ever saw before; the women cut all to pieces ... With knives; scalped; their brains knocked out; children two or three months old; all ages lying there, from sucking infants up to warriors ... By whom were they mutilated? By the United States troops ...
—- John S. Smith, Congressional Testimony of Mr. John S. Smith, 1865

We want to celebrate independence from the tyranny of others while we rape, rob and rend a country from the native people in the name of saving them from their own savagery? In this instance a people who not only surrendered but who actively sought peace with the white man. Yet we would not "back down" and "retaliated" with the "justice" that we concocted in our own fucking arrogant minds.

Fingers and ears were cut off the bodies for the jewelry they carried. The body of White Antelope, lying solitarily in the creek bed, was a prime target. Besides scalping him the soldiers cut off his nose, ears, and testicles-the last for a tobacco pouch ...
    —- Stan Hoig

This is just an example of many probable instances where the white man thought he was justified in the slaughter of Native Americans, because humans are so damned stupid to fear and hate anything different from them. I am not absolving that there may have been tribes of Native Americans that may have been hostile and attacked the white man for no reason. But clumping all Native Americans by one tribe or isolated incidents is a thing that humans are good at. We hate, kill and spill blood in the name of whatever the hell we think is necessary. We hate people for their skin color, their religion, their sexual orientation ... when the hell will this shit stop? This country was founded on the blood of another people, and we want to celebrate with fireworks and patting ourselves on the back for "giving" the Native Americans a place to live while we steal the land out from under them and commit these kind of atrocities against them. And on top of it expect them to be thankful for their present lot in life. Really? I mean wtf?

Every fourth of july I can't find a reason to celebrate. All I can feel is a reason to hate being white and German. The atrocities of my ancestors takes a heavy toll on me. Will we ever stop killing each other for the stupid fucking reasons? I doubt it.

Jis to think of that dog Chivington and his dirty hounds, up thar at Sand Creek. His men shot down squaws, and blew the brains out of little innocent children. You call sich soldiers Christians, do ye? And Indians savages? What der yer 'spose our Heavenly Father, who made both them and us, thinks of these things? I tell you what, I don't like a hostile red skin any more than you do. And when they are hostile, I've fought 'em, hard as any man. But I never yet drew a bead on a squaw or papoose, and I despise the man who would.

I too cringe at the white man's (my supposed ancestors) history. we dont have commemorate 4th July but we have a pretty brutal history in worldwide domination, subjugation and slavery of other races. Some white men still do enjoy these pastimes (the bankers and other corporates - arseholes that they are).

ha ha how i laugh at Bob Diamond sacrificing himself to save his corporate overlord - bitch!

    sorry.

Ah, to be young, naive, and still think/care about such things... just remember, in the end it's just all about sex. Man being what he is, I doubt very much if the shoe was on the other foot things would be much different... evil has no color.

Just try not to relive the sins of the past... find someone to love and move on.

As for me, I had a pleasant, quiet, (thankfully) uneventful 4th... hope everyone here did as well.

I mentioned this in the "1500 or bust" thread but I wanted to brag a bit more on what I consider a major accomplishment: I have now indexed every issue--including Annuals and Specials--of Action Comics, Batman, Detective Comics and Superman published between 1955 and 1986 (through the last issues reflecting Earth-One continuity). That leaves only Superman: The Secret Years and a handful of guest shots and random appearances in anthology titles before I've covered every Silver and Bronze Age appearances of the Big Blue S (including Superboy) and the Darknight Detective.

So Kurt, are these "in continuity"?

Superman's appearance in Captain Action #1
    Batman's appearance in Jerry Lewis

    (I'm asking this seriously)

I was surprised that I liked as many of them as I did. I found, for example, that I'm quite fond of the Bronze Age Superman (particularly as written by Elliot Maggin and Martin Pasko), most of whose stories I'd never read prior to this project. But yeah, there were times I got through on nothing but dedication and willpower.

Keeping in mind that my standards for the whole "in continuity" thing are a lot lower than some folks', I say yes for both. It is, however, the Earth-12 Batman (as his awareness of being a comic book character suggests).

I really like the opening guitar to Led Zepplin's The Ocean.

i dunno if I mentioned it here, but I remember comparing Kashmir to a Portishead song. I friend that is a big Zepplin fan took offence at such a comparison. My other a bit more mellow friend said ... "Well Robert Plant does sound like a girl." I think The Ocean is another song that really applies. It doesn't bother me in the least, cause I think Kashmir is one of their greatest songs.
