Fannie Mae made a $2.7 billion profit in the first three months of 2012 and claism it won't need further government assistance.
About half the profit came from a reduction in previous provisions for losses on foreclosed or impaired mortgages.

Alexis Tsipras of the Left coalition has officially given up on atempts to form a coalition.
Personally I don't see why he didn't try to renegotiate the vote count with the electoral authorities on the grounds that people who voted for ND and PASOK obviously did so without understanding the consequernces.
PASOK gets to try next and when they almost inevitably fail, there will be new elections which will probably result in a further deadlock. While tat plays out, stock markets will continue to drop, economies will slow and millions of people outside Greece will suffer as a result.
To be fair to West Virgina, only about 150,000 people actually voted in the Democratic primary there.
Most of them were probably focused on other ballot issues like Congressional preselection and the peopel who voted for Judd probably just picked the "not Obama" box.
As quickly as the White House and Obama spokesmen walked it back, I don't think so. It's worth noting that mainstream (non-LGBT) press wouldn't let up on Jay Carney during Monday's White House press conference. It just went on and on, with over 50 questions about marriage for 21 straight (pun intended) minutes. That's been happening more and more lately, but never for this long and never this relentlessly. Every indication up until early Wednesday morning, including the puzzling absence of a line about Amendment One to an Obama Campaign North Carolina GOTV email, was that they wanted this to die a quick death until at least after the election. Not clarifying and finishing his "evolution" were becoming a negative focus on the campaign, and the political danger of coming out publicly were relatively minor (People who wouldn't have voted for him still won't vote for him, and gay donors and volunteers are re-energized for the first time since...2008, I guess.), so why not go ahead and say what pretty much everybody already knew to be the case?
(The rest of my reaction to Wednesday's awesome statement, which may or may not interest people here: For Christians, President Obama Said Much More Than You Think He Said)
This will have to do for now:
North Carolina Bans Gay Marriage
MAY 9, 2012 | ISSUE 48•19
By a margin of 58 to 42 percent, North Carolina voters approved an amendment to the state constitution that bans same-sex marriage. What do you think?
I have a policy of not saying anything negative about the South. Otherwise my Alabama friend will hammer me with his Faulkner-Welty-O'Connor tirade again.
Marla Wint
Systems AnalystOnce again, I strongly suspect the underhanded machinations of one Professor Donald Dawes, a con man who travels the country selling state legislatures on phony constitutional amendments.

ArrowsmithDamn right it's banned. The Wright Brothers didn't put a plane in the air to see two dudes kissing under it.

Here's a story that's not from The Onion but looks like it should be.
Fox Now Asking: Is The Drop In Gas Prices A Bad Thing?
Earlier this year, Fox News hyped the rise in gasoline prices, blaming President Obama even though experts agree that worldwide market factors, not U.S. policies, set gas prices. So what is Fox saying now that gas prices are falling?
Bingo. And as far as I know, the conservative religious types are not in Obama's camp, no?Matt Algren has it:
I could swear we've been over this before, but I'll say it again because it's important.
The black and latino communities are not anti-gay anything. The conservative religious (particularly christian) communities are. Conservative religious communities are more prominent in the black and Latino communities, so the effect is more pronounced, but when you dig into a by-religion analysis (as some did in California after the Prop 8 vote in 2008), it's religiosity that matters, not race. Pro-gay/anti-gay vote proportions from conservative religious blacks and conservative religious Latinos are comparable to that of conservative religious whites. Pro-gay/anti-gay vote proportions from liberal religious blacks and liberal religious Latinos are comparable to that of liberal religious whites. Pro-gay/anti-gay vote proportions from atheist or agnostic blacks and atheist or agnostic Latinos are comparable to that of atheist or agnostic whites.
It's the religion that matters, not the race.

We struggled against apartheid in South Africa, supported by people the world over, because black people were being blamed and made to suffer for something we could do nothing about; our very skins. It is the same with sexual orientation. It is a given.
