Anyone been reading Marvel's Crossgen stuff (and specifically, anyone finish the Ruse or Sigil minis)? What did you think?

Ruse is absolutely awesome. Sherlock Holmes style mystery goodness with all the nuance and wit a Waid penned comic should have. It contains many little easter eggs from the old series, though they're never given much attention. It's left as a little treat for those in the know. All in all, I highly recommend it.
Sigil, I was really looking forward to based on the premise. I haven't read the original, and the new mini keeps dancing around details from the old series without ever making them explicit, which is interesting. The execution has been alright. Not Carey's best work, but it's definitely worth looking into if you have a taste for pirates, adventure, magic, or coming-of-age tales.
Ruse was OK, it was well scripted and had good art. Plot-wise it didnt really live up to its inital promise, which is fairly important when it comes to this type of mystery. Id give it 7/10, not really essential reading but a fun diversion from the usual Marvel fare.
Nope, I'm waiting for/if other Crossgen properties I liked "back in the day" will be done next: Negation, Sojourn and KKBB.
Comics still reading: Saga, Sixth Gun, Walking Dead, All New X-Men, Daredevil, Fury MAX. DC New 52 isn't the worth the paper its printed on...
I thought Ruse was good. Not quite is good as the original two Ruse trades from CrossGen, but definitely worth reading if you were a fan of the series.
I rather liked Ruse, enjoying it almost more than anything else I read from Marvel.
Sigil less so, but it was still okay. It did make me realize I like Oliffe's art better than Kirk's, though.

I enjoyed both Ruse and Sigil. I enjoyed Ruse more for the humor than the mystery. I thought Sigil improved as it went along. The high school anxieties were a nice throwback to early Spider-Man days but was a drag on the main story. I enjoyed Meridian from the original CrossGen and Sam was reminding me more and more of Sephie as the series progressed.
I'm still mystified why Marvel isn't giving us some version of Sojourn.
Liked both but I agree they feel a little flawed.
Ruse's main mystery wasn't all that solid to begin with, it was mainly the characters that pulled it along and made it enjoyable.
Sigil is a little bit of the opposite, the story and later action carried it as really only one character was the focus. Although I am interested in Captain Sin now, so I hope that they release a El Cazador mini or one shot in the future.
Anyone planning to order Mystic? I like the looks of the art/setting...kind of hoping they visit other magic schools/cities at some point too like they did with the original Mystic (that was one of my favorite arcs :)
I am hoping there will be more Sigil too...anyone hear anything along those lines?

I just reread Ruse and Sigil yesterday. I pretty much agree with everyone else--Ruse was just as good as the original series. Of course, with the exception of one or two minor details, it was the same story CrossGen published. Same characters and same writer. It would have been more surprising if it wasn't any good.
Sigil was okay. It was a new character, new setting and new creators. There was nothing of the old series. It wasn't bad, really, but it wasn't Sigil. They could have called this book something else and I think people would have liked it more.
I would buy more Ruse tomorrow. And, if it stayed at $2.99, I think I would read more of Sigil, too. Just wishing for a different name.
I think Mystic is going to run into the same problem Sigil did. Fans of the old series are going to want the old series. But I pre-ordered it because I enjoyed G. Willow Wilson's series Air.
Free your soul and let it fly....
I thought Sigil was fine, but I was aching for the orignal series the whole time so that may have made me more than a little lukewarm towards it...
Yep, that's exactly how I'm feeling towards the new Mystic series. I mean, I can definitely accept it on its own merits, but I do miss the original Mystic still.Originally Posted by DonC

Always remember this stuff isn't real.
Not really adding anything new to what anyone else has said, just adding my voice. Ruse was just as good as the original series. I did miss that Emma was always part of the mystery in the original run as she had powers and wasn't supposed to be using them but occasionally had to.
The art was occasionally great occasionally not so great. Probably had as much to do with having more than one artist on the series. I hadn't heard of either artist before this, but they were ok.
Sigil, while a good comic, just wasn't Sigil. Mike Carey told a solid story and Leonard Kirk turns in his usual excellent art...but again...it wasn't Sigil. If you buy it go into looking for a good story, but dont go looking for Sigil because you wont find it.
As for Mystic...not planning on getting the actually issues. I might pick up the trade depending on reviews.
