Default Story Change and New Contents Announced for "Superman #712"

This was just reported by the Superman Homepage:

DC Comics sent out the following media release regarding a change in story for "Superman #712" from what had been previously solicited.

Please note the new contents for SUPERMAN #712, now written by Kurt Busiek with art by Rick Leonardi, a cover by Carlos Pacheco and Jesus Merino and a variant cover by Stanley "Artgerm" Lau.

This fill in issue contains a lost classic, Lost Boy: A Tale of Krypto the Superdog, set shortly after Superboy died in Infinite Crisis and Superman went missing.

DC Comics determined that the previously solicited story did not work within the "Grounded" storyline. However, Chris Roberson, will be back for the final two issues of Superman's year long walk across America. As we near the conclusion, catch up with Superman next month as he makes stops in Portland and Newberg, OR.

SUPERMAN #712 is scheduled to arrive in stores on June 22.

The original solicitation information for "Superman #712" previously issued was:

Meet Los Angeles's newest super hero in the latest Chapter of "Grounded": Sharif! But Sharif discovers that in today's current cultural climate, some people don't want his help - they just want him gone. Can Superman aid Sharif and quell a prejudiced public, or are there some problems too big even for the Man of Steel to solve?

We can only speculate whether the story that was not published contained material that was deemed to be too racially or politically charged.

I don't know about you but I was actually interested in the original solicitation, mostly because I was interested in this Sharif character since Robinson said on this forum that he was supposed to be Sindbad from a story arc in the late 80's and also I'm Middle Eastern myself but the Krypto story sounds interesting.

No matter how many reboots, new origins, reinterpretations or suit redesigns. In the end, he will always be SUPERMAN

Hmm, so they finally decided to print that Krypto story Busiek wrote years ago.

I love Krypto more than most people, and I hate the JMS story, but as a guy named Sharif from Los Angeles, I'm sorely disappointed in this and chafe at being replaced BY A DOG.

It was actually a pretty good story, glad it got printed, but I was pumped about the announced story to.

Gutless on the move of DC, but whatever.

....I just saw the variant cover of this today, and honestly thought it was someone placing an old variant in the new releases section when I saw Busiek & Leonardi's name on it.

Wow. I kinda wanna totally buy this now.

The story was terrible and carried no emotional weight given that it's so tied into a dead Connor. There's no greater insult in Arabic than to call an Arab man "Quelb" (dog), and to have my namesake's story replaced by one about a dog is really inflammatory.

    Default Hrmm....

"We can only speculate whether the story that was not published contained material that was deemed to be too racially or politically charged"

Can I speculate that it's because Grounded Sucks and I wish they had pulled the plug on it before it started?

Just venting. Move along, there's nothing to see here......
If the shoe fits: "a crankly old man standing just on the edge of a crowd gathered for a concert and stamping his feet yelling at the crowd to stop having fun, that they don't know what fun is."

So it's safe to say that Grounded was probably, most defiantly, the biggest flop and catastrophic failure in DC Comics when it came to Superman? I know New Krypton lasted way too long, but man did Grounded really fall on its face.

Could it possibly be the biggest crap that was ever released in modern day with the "JMS" name-stamp on it?

Superman #712 Not Changed Over Muslim Content. But Over Kitten Content.
That the story content change in Superman 712 has nothing whatsoever to do with the appearance of Sharif.

And everything to do with the story starting with Superman rescuing a kitten out of a tree. You know, like he does in the Superman movie.

And this caused considerable problems with certain DC executives. They thought it was too sweet, too innocent, too anodyne, and not the kind of Superman stories they wanted to tell. The kitten up a tree image symbolised for them what was wrong with the Superman books. It became totemic in the office, standing for far more than it could possibly symbolise. It had to go.

If this Bleeding Cool report is in any way accurate, this "nota"reboot is more of a train wreck than anyone may have imagined.

I don't think the people in charge in that office should be in charge at that office anymore.

On the other hand, it's about time we got that Krypto story. Reminds me of when Superman books were really good and filled with promise...you know right after Up Up and Away.

This is a joke, right?..... Wait, April Fools' already long passed

Naaaaah, there's no way DC could be that stupid.

Default CBR: "Superman" #712 Changes Draw Questions On Content

A last minute swap that sees an unpublished Kurt Busiek tale replace the latest chapter in "Grounded" has sparked debate over DC Comics reasons for holding back a "Superman" issue featuring a Muslim superhero, and CBR has new details.

These people should not be working on Superman. At all.
