I want to buy a Simonson-Thor-sized omnibus of Gotham Central.
I want to buy a Simonson-Thor-sized omnibus of Gotham Central.
I have the 4 HCs on my shelf, is it really as big as Simonson-Thor?
Also, for what it's worth, I prefer the smaller format, I feel like I'm more inclined to read it at that size than I would be if it was an Omnibus. Not suggesting that they shouldn't make an Omni, it would be a great series to collect in 1-shot, and I want more people to read it. Just personally, I don't think I would "upgrade."
Man, I've been waiting for years to get my hands on a decent HC version of Year One, so I was quite happy when the new, deluxe edition was announced last year.
But now this. Mazzucchelli advises people not to buy it:

I think this will get the prices for the old HC version even higher now.
I think this is interesting because 2 of his complaints are things the fans would complain about if DC didn't do them - 1) Re-color 2) Print it on shiny paper
Though I do think it's cool to see someone in the business criticize one of the big companies. Too often I feel like they're hesitant to speak their mind, it's refreshing to know that's not the case.

Especially the glossy paper is off-putting. DC did a great job with using matte paper for e.g. Absolute V or Absolute Watchmen. Why glossy here? That is completely the wrong paper (although that might also be because of the re-coloring).
Damn.
Well, at least there's the Mazzucchelli Born Again Artist's Edition to look forward to.
Depends on what kind of fans. Fans of Mazzucchelli's art would certainly not complain if the book wasn't recolored. I think it just tries to appeal to the casual fan who has seen the DVD and/or heard about the influence on the Nolan Batman films. These might be turned off by the coloring if it isn't up to modern standards. (Though he talks about corrupted coloring, which could be something different entirely).

I was slumming Amazon today for upcoming releases and found the lack of New 52 hardcover editions disturbing...
I took from the interview that only the front cover was re-coloured. As someone new to collecting trades can you explain the shiny paper issue here? Does it not look at good?
Nevertheless this is so disappointing to read. I was basically looking forward to this since it was announced. To be fair i have the original deluxe hardcover and the only real incentive for this was that it was oversized. I agree the cover isn't as great and now the art might not look at good inside...gutted, wasted opportunity for what is basically the best Batman story.
Huh? It seems like every other upcoming HC is new 52. Just on the first page if you search for DC hardcover books on Amazon (sorted by publication date), there are four books (Supes: What price tomorrow?; Flash: Move forward; GL New Guardians 1; Batman-DK Knight terrors).
Oh, on a different note: Amazon has Absolute Batman and Robin on preorder: $73 ($99 cover) for 488 pages. Nice to see the page count go a bit up again.
"This Absolute volume collects Batman & Robin issues #1-16, Bruce Wayne The Return #1 as well as character sketches, a cover gallery and artist and writer commentary"
"and worst — they printed the color from corrupted, out-of-focus digital files, completely obscuring all of Richmond’s hand-painted work." This seems to refer to the interior.

Last mention of this aspect, promise. But my online store sells two copies of Absolute KC. One released 2009 and one 2012. No idea if these dates are correct, but if they are, which one of the two is missing text, and which one is safe to buy?
I was really looking forward to Year One deluxe, finally having it in oversize would be great. Not sure if I'll be picking it up now though as those comments on the interior pages are quite damning. Will wait on comparison pictures.
