I really liked this episode...it was great to see the Guardians, one of my favorite books of Marvel's in the recent years, get some serious screen time. I was a little put-off by Rocket's voice (I guess I always imagined him speaking in a slightly more Bugs Bunny-esque smart-ass voice), but that was a minor quibble.
As for the whole Quasar/Phyla-Vell thing, I think it's fine. The GotG needed a woman in their mix; they also needed someone powerful enough to take on Iron Man in aerial hand-to-hand combat. And channeling the whole "Green Lantern ring constructs" thing through Phylla definitely fit the bill. It would've been cool to have seen Mantis or Moondragon or Gamora, but none of them could've covered that second requirement, without some serious retweaking of their power-sets.
And as for Quasar's parentage, who's to say she's even the daughter of Mar-Vell within the cartoon continuity? Thus far, we've only seen the Kree as blue-skinned aliens (including Mar-Vell, which I believe is the Ultimate Universe take on the character). As there haven't been any pink-skinned Kree showing up, it's easy enough to say that this version of Phylla is not only not Mar-Vell's daughter, but not even Kree at all.
There's no sense in nonsense when the heat's hot.
Actually, I can sort of see this as maybe being a valid point. I know that much of Avengers EMH was set in motion 2 years ago, so it may have been conceptualized when Phyla still had the bands. That's still threading the needle, though... she didn't have them very long.

Some art I threw together.
Really? How long has it been? Because it doesn't really feel that long to me.
I noticed that there was no Drax, Moondragon or Gammora. I figure they probably don't want to roll those characters out unless they're doing some big Thanos story. As for Mantis, they're probably waiting for the chance to introduce her in some future Avengers story. Though, Celestial Madonna might be a little weird for Sunday mornings kids' cartoons.Originally Posted by Jaded Devil
Great, you had to go ahead and say it. Now it's going to bother me that I don't know her origin. I just figured that she's still Mar-Vell's daughter, but that instead of trying to preserve a heroic legacy, it was a Kree experiment in combining Kree and Titan DNA. The Kree always seem to be experimenting on someone (as shown by this episode) in order to find ways to unlock their own evolutionary potential. And as for Quasar's parentage, who's to say she's even the daughter of Mar-Vell within the cartoon continuity? I'm going to come off as a Debbie Downer, but I didnt like this episode either. I'm not much of a fan of that line-up of the GotG. I also probably would have enjoyed it more if I didnt know who Korvac was from the comics. I guess I was underwhelmed. Eh, just me I suppose.
It's odd. I still have no idea who Michael Korvak is.

Honestly, I felt this episode could have been better suited as a two parter or something. It seems to just set up Korvac which is fine but the ending felt like 'what that was it?'
Phyla is the most cartoon friendly of the Guardians females that can fight. Gamora or Moondragon's default bikini wear along with Ms. Marvel on screen might have been too racy, not to mention both have history with Thanos, who may or may not be off limits. Mantis would at best have to replace Warlock's role here so Phyla with her Quasar powers is used. As a fan of the character, I loved that.
Overall, the episode proves why I among many aren't excited about an Avengers series that is all one and dones, too much seems to get left on the cutting room floor in story telling. It should get a 'C' but I will give it a 'B+' because I really miss Guardians of the Galaxy, especially Phyla and Warlock.
I enjoyed the DnA version of the Guardians, but I have to admit I was pretty sad it wasn't the original Guardians, the ones who were actually in the Korvac saga, on the show. Those are also really great characters. Even a mix if you wanted to get the great Groot and Rocket Raccoon in would have been better, IMO.
To only downside to this episode was the lack of Cosmo :(
