Default CBR: Andreyko Reexamines the Past of "Captain America & Bucky"

Writers Ed Brubaker and Marc Andreyko and artist Chris Samnee kick off their new ongoing series, "Captain America & Bucky," in July. CBR News spoke with Andreyko about the title.

Going to assume Bucky's not dead then. I mean, judging from various comments, some people are like "of course he's dead" and others are like "he's apparently dead". Best answer then is that he's only dead for the immediate future, or he's dead with a get out of death clause built into his death like Cyclops had in Astonishing X-men. The idea of him being taken off the map and assumed dead to be later recruited for black ops by Rogers or Nick Fury sounds likely.

No offense to Brubaker and Andreyko, but for me it's Chris Samnee's superior artwork which makes this a buy-on-sight title. I hope that editorial has once again paired him with Matthew Wilson, whose colouring added so much to Thor, The Mighty Avenger.

Way too much effort was put into bringing him back. You don't take a character that went from being a joke to wide popularity and just kill him off cheaply in the middle of a random crossover event.

Storyline wise, it had to happen.

Something had to get Steve Rogers back into costume, not only for the movie but for the flash of the future we story in Captain America Reborn.

And the only way Steve would do it is if Bucky was injured to such as an extent that he wouldn't walk again, or he had to die.

So now Cap returns to the shield thinking it's the right thing to do... then Bucky comes back and Cap can worry that he's started the very thing he aimed to avoid, setting the way for Brubaker's big storyline next year.

Also, I don't think they'd do all this cool backstory stuff/on-going if Bucky was gonna be dead. I think by the end of this arc, Bucky is gonna be back. They just needed to do a cool story to pass the time until Fear Itself was over.

Maybe this title eventually becomes Winter Soldier?

What about the Cold War portions with the Winter Soldier? During his "Captain America" run Ed Brubaker has given us hints and glimpses of some of Bucky's actions and relationships as the Winter Soldier. Will that be expanded upon or will we see all new scenes and new characters?

Andreyko: The stuff you'll see in our Winter Soldier issues has not been seen yet.

    Would be awesome!

Yeah. It's the inevitable result of Bucky being so successful as Captain America, in story and out of story. It got to a point where he couldn't just casually step down from the job.

It does seem Andreyko is hinting that Buck will eventually reappear, whether he's dead now or not. His comments about Buck finding atonement, and that the series will be not just a "retrospective" gives me hope he's not dead, or thrown away. I'm much more excited for this title ... just needs to be retitled Tales of Suspense.

I agree, I would've loved to see the return of Tales of Suspense, especially since we've had the return of Journey Into Mystery.

Eh, for all I'd prefer the Tales of Suspense title, I can see why they'd want to emphasize the Captain America-ness of it all. And really, in this market you need to latch onto every tie-in opportunity you have.

I'm not a fan of it when Marvel switches a books main character like when Hercules took over Incredible Hulk or when Black Panther took over Daredevil so when I learned that this would be set in the past I dropped it. If the next arc is set in the present I may pick it.
